My switch broke, so I'm in the process of replacing it.

Before taking it apart, I made note of the wire colors:

L=Black
1=Grey
2=Brown
3=Lt Blue

Good luck!

SOURCE: wiring code for ceiling fan

These fans do not have a standard color code for the fan switch. What you can do is turn off the power, keep the white neutral connected. Then using the black power wire take one of the switch wires and connect to that black, turn the power on and observe the speed .. low mark it 1, medium mark it 2, high mark it 3. Repeat untill you have identified all the speed wires. Then connect these wires to the 1,2,3, terminations of your new switch

What number goes to what color wire

It doesn't work that way! What make/model of fan do you have? How many wires on capacitor? Usually the black wire goes into the L. Always write that info down BEFORE removing the wires & never cut the wires. Also, you have to get the correct switch. Just because it looks the same on the outside doesn't mean it's the same on the inside.

How to install new ceiling fan 3 speed switch with the 5 wires on the condenser?

Sales person should have written down what color wire goes into which slot on the switch. If you have two wires on the same end, and the same color, one of these goes into the #1. Black usually goes into the L slot. But, none of this matters if you don't have the correct switch. Just because it looks the same on the outside doesn't mean it's the same on the inside.

Fan switch was removed from the fan. I have 4 wires for the switch. 2 brown, 1 gray and 1 black. On the switch it has the letter L numbers 1, 2, 3 on it which wire goes on which number?

This is a bad situation. Ceiling fan 3-speed switches are not universal and neither is the wiring codes. I always make sure to right down the color codes and where they plugged into the switch before removing wires. I can maybe narrow one down but will assume no responsibility. L stands for line and is usually power into the switch, which is normally black, but not always.

NUTONE FAN 8310: WHAT IS THE CORRECT WIRING FOR AN EXHAUST FAN WITH DUPLEX SWITCH?

It does not matter whether the power goes to the fan unit or to the switch box, you still need 3 insulated wires going between the switich and the fan, and the ground wire as a 4th wire. If power is at switch, you will have white as nuetral feed to fan and 2 blacks (or a red and a black) one each to bring power for light and power for fan or heater element. ( if so equiped). If power is to fan unit, the white wire must have a piece of colored tape (red, orange, blue, brown) and this whtie wire is attached to the black power wire. The tape shows that this is not a neutral. The tape has to be at both ends of the white. Now, the other 2 wires (blk & blk or red & blk) can be atteched to the switch and carry the elec. to the fan light, blower, and or heater. Goodluck, Macgivor
