I have a embarq 660 series router and using a compaq presario computer. I have already installed the belkin surf/share wireless USB adapter to this laptop. When I go to Internet explorer it says offline.

your problem is a IP address conflict

Embarq and Belkin have the same IP address 192.168.2.1

change the IP address in to your Router.

To restore the router to factory default settings, please do the following:
1. Unplug the router's power supply
2. Press and hold the reset button on the bottom of the router
3. Keep the reset button depressed and, at the same time, plug the power supply back in
4. Keep the reset button depressed for another 10 seconds
5. Release the reset button
======================= Manually configuration ==============================

Step 1 : Connect modem - Router - Computer ( Wired )
Step 2 : Open router setup by typing http://192.168.2.1 on the address bar of internet explorer
Step 3 : On the left side under internet WAN click Connection Type
Step 4 : leave the Password Blank and click submit
Step 5 : Choose the connection type as dynamic and click next

Now go to lan settings and change the IP address 192.168.2.1 in to 192.168.1.2

Step 6 : Leave the Host name blank and click apply
Step 7 : On the left Under Internet WAN Click MAC Address
Step 8 : Click Clone and Click Apply changes
Step 9 : If the Internet status on the top right is connected
Step 10 : Then check if you have internet
Step 11 : if not Then unplug the Power Cable from the Modem And the Router
Step 12 : Plug the power Cord to the Modem
Step 13 : Wait till all the lights are on
Step 14 : Plug the power to the belkin
Step 15 : Check the color of the light in the belkin
Step 16 :If green then Check if you have internet
If not working then call belkin
=================== WIRELESS SETTING UP A WIRELESS CONNECTION ====================

Do you know for sure there is a wireless connection in the area you trying to connect, Wireless internet isn't accessible every were and when it is available it could be protected by a security pass phrase. The only way to really get full use out of your wireless internet is to go to a company that sells the wireless internet cards

I just installed a D-Link DIR-655. My desktop is running just fine but my laptop won't connect wirelessly. Well it says I'm connected to the network but when I click on Internet Explorer it says, " Can not...

I think what we're dealing with then is a Windows Firewall problem, for whatever reason its blocking Internet Explorer and Safari from the net. The globe is proof that even Vista can see internet on your connection. We need to allow those programs through your firewall.

Internet explorer and Safari are the ones we are looking for. Let me know if this helps. Unfortunately my vista machine is at home or else I could give you more precise instructions.

Internet Explorer cannot display the web page

Have you installed any software firewalls lately, I know Norton has a habit of randomly blocking the internet.

Try disabling any firewall you may have and try again, if the internet surfing problem persists, try plugging in a wired connection and seeing if you can surf from there.
