My AOE 2 Conquerors will not start (Windows 7)

I have AOE II as well as the expansion "The Conquerors"(CD) installed on my Laptop. It will not load. Every time i try to start AOE 2, it will spin in the CD tray, get to the loading screen, and then just stop. These are the things i have tried that have not fixed the problem: -Run as administrator -Change the resolution -UN-install then RE-install, both CD's Any suggestions would help, Comment if the post is unclear...

Got the same problem on my wife's laptop. The best thing that worked is a hard reboot - when game halts, you just reboot (reset), and then after clean loading of Windows you start only the game, and it works. It worked most of times (like 9 of 10, in the rest of cases it took another reboot), but that's obviously a nightmare :) Apparently I got rid of the problem but still unsure what helped. Here are the tips I used:

  1. Video drivers update/downgrade. Check the manufacturer's site of your videocard and look for the different driver versions. Either you should update it, or get an OLDER one, if your current is the latest.
  2. Compatibility mode. Right click on the shortcut, go to Properties and then Compatibility. Try WinXP SP3 or something under, and be sure to check "Use 256 colors", "Disable visual themes", "Disable desktop composition" and "Run as administrator" boxes.
  3. DirectDrawFix. http://aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=11108 - the button for download is right above the first post (found it myself not from the first glance :). Download, run, find the game .exe file (it's like age2_x1.exe usually), and that's it. Actually fixes color palette issue with AoE2, but I guess it helped with black screen halt for the same reason with Direct Draw.

SOURCE: menu screen is black

That sounds like your video card is going out on your computer. You will have to get that replaced and then things will work properly.

Make sure your Direct X installation isn't corrupted and that you have the latest video drivers. Visit the microsoft website for a Direct X installer.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 I installed AOE III & played it successfully. When trying to install War Chiefs add-on or expansion I get this: "Age of Empires III was not installed for...

Right click on the install file and choose Run As Administrator. It might bypass that mumbo jumbo. Also, try making a shortcut to the install file and setting the compatibility to Windows XP SP3 or something. Good luck.

Hello. I have Sony Vaio PCG-5426. And I can't reinstall windows on that machine. I have out CD-ROM "II FreeCom" and i try to reinstall with that. In BIOS menu I acces for first boot drive...

you shouldn't need to have to press f9 to boot from cd rom if you have it set in the bios as the first boot device , are you sure the copy of windows on cd that you have is bootable. Try booting from the disc on another laptop or pc and see if you can start it

Another option to try is to boot from a usb drive

instructions on how to do that are here

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118576

once you have booted to usb you should be able to access the cd rom

depending on what version of windows you are trying to install you will need to run different programs.

you could also install vista or windows 7 to usb drive and install it from that, it is much quicker than installing from cd/dvd you would need to be able to boot from usb to start with though

how to install vista or windows 7 from usb instructions can be found here

As i try to install Age Of Empires 3:Warchiefs, windows says that Age of empires 3 is not installed for current user, although im the administrator. Can i force install Warchiefs? I have windows 7 premium

It is just an expansion pack. You must first completely install AOE 3, then the expansion pack will have the directories it needs to install to already created for it. If you have the first CD in the GOLD pack, reinstall from that first then try the Warchiefs disk.

Can't install War Chiefs and Asian Dynasties.

Since you just copy-pasted AoE 3, the installation registry keys were not created. When the expansions are installed, they check Windows Registry first to make sure that AoE is installed. If you have the disk for the original AoE, try reinstalling it. You should then be able to install the expansions.
