You don't need any special software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

Do digital cameras work without software?

If you mean software on a computer, absolutely. Digital cameras work fine when not connected to a computer.

If you mean in the camera, then no. All digital cameras have a processor of some type inside and this processor needs some programming. This programming can be in the form of hardware, firmware, or software.

Original Software for the Digital D-80 Nikon Camera

Go to http://support.nikontech.com/
Select "Digital Cameras" then "D80" from "By Product"
Select "Software" from Category
Search

The site is a bit clumsy but you can find all software there.

Camera Control Pro is additional software (sold separately) so you can download only trial legally.
