If the BIOS does not have the USB as one of the boot options then you cannot boot up with an USB memory stick. In this case you need to replace the CD/DVD drive with a new one.
I recommend trying the restoration for your Sony VGN-FW305J again using the recovery partition that most likely resides in your hard drive. This is accessed by pressing F10 when prompted on boot up. This will eliminate any problems your restoration encountered that may have been caused by errors or scratches on your restoration DVD's.
The manual for your Sony VGN-FW305J is available here from sony, and will detail full restoration procedure as well.

What happens when you insert a DVD/CD? If inserting one immediately locks the laptop, and you have already tried uninstalled and reinstalling the drive, its time to purchase another DVD drive for your laptop.
You can only change the region code 4 times and on the fourth time it locks on that region and you cannot change it again.
You can upgrade the firmware on your DVD drive to make it region free (if available for your model DVD), but if you install or make a mistake then your DVD drive will be a piece of junk.
The best solution is to run a piece of software that defeats the region code. I use DVD Region Free from www.dvdidle.com, it cost a few dollars and you get free updates forever, I also use their DVD copy program DVD FAB Gold, great software also free upgrades forever.
Will first of all is it a dvd rom/ cd rom drive or just a dvd rom, because you cant use cds in dvd drives! Second of all, make sure your driver is fully updated, it might be missing something that it needs that will fix the problem after you update it!
tried, the option and failed, Any other suggestions
