Camera does not turn on and on occasion flashes "battery depleted" even with new pair of batteries or freshly charged NiMH. Would the firmware failure replacement cure the disease? How much would it be without warranty?

If you can get into the menu system, find "reset" in the set-up menu. If not, remove the card and battery...press every button....leave it alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.....this is called a "hard reset" and sometimes works.
This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
i got it!!! on my cam i hold down the menu button at the same time power on, it will showup a " ver 1.00" and lens move a little maybe u have to do it 2 times but second time it should work

ok have same problem press the power button and and the play> button at the same time. your screen will come on but not lens. then hold the play button down untill lens come out. this will work for you , you may have to do it a couple of times but it will work
My optio t10 did basically the same thing...turned on, lens goes out, then automatically shut off. I took the advice of a solution listed here for another problem...hit the camera. For whatever reason it worked.
