How to install nancy drew danger by design?

I have Nancy Drew: Danger by Design. I have a Windows 7 and I've already installed the first disc of two. But when it comes to putting a pathway in, it tells me I don't have the correct pathway. I made a new folder and put that pathway in and it still won't stop popping up this error message: Setup could not find a file on a specified path or disc. Please check that the proper disc is inserted or specify a new path. I have already tried so many different and random pathways and even tried going the right way a few dozen times. It won't go away from the error message and the pathway isn't correct. Can anyone help me?

SOURCE: Hi, The game, Nancy Drew: Danger

The first thing you should try, is to update both JAVA and Flash. If it uses those, that is likely the issue.

Here are the links:
http://www.java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_xpi.jsp

http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Be sure to uncheck the boxes that install toolbars. Also, it wouldn't hurt to make sure that Windows is up to date. Click the Start button, click All Programs, and then click Windows Update.

When i install a nancy drew game, a little box pops up with the feature, component, file, and error, and it says my access is denied to the game

This is the Object Reference error which can occur when the Nancy Drew Central file becomes corrupted, often by installing an older game after a newer one.
  • To fix it, delete the Nancy Drew Central folder, located here:
  • C:Program Files
  • Nancy Drew
  • Nancy Drew Central.
  • Make sure to only delete the Nancy Drew Central folder

Here are a couple of ideas- I have played many of the Nancy Drew games, so hopefully something here will help you. First thing I would try is to not put the disc in to play. I think that you do not need the disc to actually be in the computer on this game. Some of the games will load the game twice if you have the disc in and then you can't play it at all. Another words that computer tries to load the disc and the game already installed, and it doesn't work well. So you might want to try that first. Also there is the uninstall and reinstall to try next. Did you check that you disc drive is compatible? If you are playing on an older computer, check that you have a dvd drive-newer computers do. Also do you have enough ram and a fast enough processor? If you look on the package, it will tell you the game requirements, another words what type of set up you need in order to run the game. I would guess that you do have the right requirements, and one of the first two suggestions will fix it. Good luck!

From the Nancy Drew web site:

Windows Vista/7 Support Installing older games (#1-13) with Windows Vista/7.
While our older games are not completely Windows Vista/7 compliant (notably games #1-13), there is a workaround which has been successful for most players. Please take the following steps to manually install.
If you had previously installed, uninstall the game and then delete all remaining game file folders from your computer, including emptying them out of your Recycle Bin. These files may be in one of the following locations:
C:\Nancy Drew\
C:\Program Files\Nancy Drew\
In your Documents folder: C:\Users\Username\Documents\
Once this is done, make sure you're logged on as an Administrator for your computer and manually install by taking the following steps:
1. Go to your "Documents" folder and create a new folder. Rename the folder with the title of the game.
2. Insert game Disk 1 in your disk drive and open "Computer" from the "Start" menu.
3. Double-click on your CD-Rom/DVD drive, look for a Setup or Setup Launcher Installshield file. Double-click this file to start the installation process.
4. When install asks what directory you want your game to install to, click "Browse".
5. Navigate to the game folder you created by selecting "C:" drive, then "Users" (or User name), then "Documents", then select the game folder.
6. Continue forward with the installation process, when asked if you want to install DirectX, check "No, I will install myself".
7. Upon completion, uncheck the "Play Now" box, click finish and exit setup.
For game titles #1-5, follow these three additional steps:
1. Right-click the game icon that is now on your desktop, select "Properties".
2. Under "Properties", click on the "Compatibility" tab.
3. Check the "Run in Compatibility Mode" box and then select "Windows 98/Me" from the drop-down menu.
You should now be able to open and play the game. If you installed an older version of DirectX with the game, please go to Microsoft's Download Center to download and install the latest version of DirectX for your version of Windows.
