The only way is a reinstall of the OS and drivers. Dell is better in that sense. XP also has a Restore application built-in but it will only restore your OS back to when you first installed it. It doesn't delete files and downloads. So that might be the way to go if you are doing it for yourself. If it's for sale then I suggest the reinstall. Hope that helped.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 (Windows XP Home) won't reboot. It's giving me a "Loading PBR for descriptor 1 ... done" line on a black screen. What can I do to fix it. Can I salvage my content / files

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

When i try to reboot my dell inspiron 1501 to factory settings after i press F8 and click "repair computer" it just starts normally and goes to my desktop.

Hi,

To restore your Dell computer to it's original factory settings, here's how:

To use PC Restore:
  1. Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.

  1. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press .

If you do not press in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the computer again.
notice.gif NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.

  1. On the next screen that appears, click Restore.

  2. On the next screen, click Confirm.

The restore process takes approximately 6-10 minutes to complete.

  1. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

note.gif NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.
  1. When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer was turned on.

  1. Click Next.

The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.
After the computer restarts, click OK.

Thanks and have a good one.

I cant reboot my dell inspiron530s to the factory settings? i ve try every thing,Ctrl+F11 and it wont work

Many manufacturer's (especially Dell) have a habit of creating a hidden partition on your local drive which holds everything you need to put your computer back to day zero. Access to this is acheived either through a combination of key presses (this will show up when booting the computer as a message stating "press xx to repair your computer") or through the original cd/dvd rom that came with your new system.
You can obtain the original discs through dell from their website. You can obtain information and help through the dell forums.

I want to reboot my dell 1505 inspiron laptop to factory specs. Please help.

Note: restoring your computer to its original factory settings will clear most of the data off of your hard drive, including personal files. Be sure to back up what you need.

Some computers ship without a system restore, but your computer more than likely has it.
To restore your computer to its original state, do the following:
- Make sure your computer is powered off.
- Turn on your computer, and hold the 'Ctrl' key and the 'F11' key at the same time
- When the menu appears, select 'restore'
- If your computer does not have system restore, you will not be able to / not see restore
- Confirm that you wish to restore your computer
- Your system will be reset to its original state
- When finished, select 'finish' to reboot the computer

You will have to go though some of the menus that you did when you originally had your computer. Your computer should finish restoring after these menus.

Hi,

Holding zero is the method for restoring Toshiba computers. Sony Vaio should use F10. From there you can do a full system restore to factory defaults.

Hope that helps :)

Recovery

If you want to restore the computer to its original state, these instructions are available from the DELL website:

Use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system. PC Restore restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer. Any programs or files added since you received your computer—including data files—are permanently deleted from the hard drive. Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC Restore.
To use PC Restore:
  1. Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen.
  1. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.

If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the computer again.
notice.gif NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot in the following step.
  1. On the next screen that appears, click Restore.

  2. On the next screen, click Confirm.

The restore process takes approximately 6–10 minutes to complete.
  1. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.
