My oil filter is leaking and it is tight

I get normal oil changes but this time i noticed that my oil is leaking from the filter again

  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2009

My 2003 Aviator just started a leak around the oil filter. Changed filter today (without changing oil) and will monitor. Seems like the filter screws into a manifold that may be the cause. Will try that next if leak continues.

Take it Straight Back to toe Folks that Changed the OIL and DEMAND that they Correct the Leak, It was not leaking when you left it with them.

If anyone else has this problem, I'm betting its your oil filter adapter gasket. Of course check to see if the problem is just a bad oil filter seal but mine was not. The oil filter adapter is like 10 - $15 at Auto Zone or Napa. If you feel you can't do the job yourself then take it to the auto repair shop. It's only four bolts and change out the gasket but you must drain the coolant cause the water run through the same housing and it's kind of a pain to get to on the vehicle. Napa gasket p/n is 70801

If there is a tiny oil spot on the concrete by the oil filter what could cause this

possible residue from filter change,or the filter may be lose,if you can reach it try tightening it,it should only need to be hand tight. either that or when oil was added they may have spilt a drop.but more likely to be residue from filter change as when filter is changed i normally smear some oil around the new oil filter seal.

This is normal and is good. There is a one way valve built in the oil filter so when the engine is shut off this valve will shut and keep the oil in the passages so when the engine is started oil will be pumped in the engine quicker and oil preassure will be built up quicker.

Started car and lost all oil

Two main areas to look are the valve cover gasket and the oil filter. If the oil filter wasn't tightened or was cross threaded, it would cause you to lose your oil fast and leave it on the ground. The valve cover gasket would show oil all over the engine compartment and you would smell it burn off on the manifold.
