The handle mechanism wears over time. I went on eBay, bought a color matching handle for under $20 and replaced it myself. You have to be careful when removing the plastic panel bezel that surrounds the handle, drill out two rivets and your door will open like new!

Once you remove the door panel, you will see the linkage and rods. The rods are connected with these little "swing away" plastic fasteners. Basically, these fasteners have a hole on one end and a sort of channel which snaps onto the connecting rods. To remove them you just unsnap them from the connecting rods. I'm enclosing 2 pictures of typical awing away connectors. In the pictures, it's the square end which needs to be unsnapped. Hope this helps, if you need any further clarification, just post a comment.

there are little metal rods that connect to the handle of the tailgate, just like the rods that connect your door handles to the door hinges and lock mechanism. just pop off the plastic cover over the tailgate handle and check and see if the rods are still connected to the handle.

This is common in the Chevy's... The inner rods/clips etc get stretched from use and the handles even break inside the door and you can't tell until you remove the door panel. I know of people who have replaced all four as routine maintenance! good luck
You will need to remove the door panel and inspect the latch rods, one may be off the latch.
