My JVC AV receiver has just started to play up (it's about 5 years old). It started with some cracking noises in the speakers and then the sound just went off. The sound came back but again went off after a while. I tried just the radio but no joy! Something is obviously wrong but should I buy a new one or get this one fixed?
Thanks,
Chris
Before you do anything else, make sure no tiny strands of speaker wire from one channel haven't got in contact with the speaker wires from the other channel. Check first on the back of the receiver, then at the back of each speaker. This can cause the circuit breakers for that channel to shut it off when there is audio. It can also blow the fuses inside your receiver. It only takes one tiny strand to blow your amp.

We found that the protector came on and we searched for a solution, however we could not find anything that fixed it. Finally we found that some of the wires for one of our speakers were touching and adjusting those wires solved the problem.
SOURCE: how to connect 6.1 speakers to 7.1 receiver
Using the Onkyo display setup, you can turn off one surround speaker, and your receiver should realize it's using the 6.1 channels instead of the 7.1
If you don't want to go that route, use the mic setup that came in the box and your Onkyo will determine by itself the 6.1 channel layout.
It should work fine.

be more specific!...how is the tv hooked up? hdmi, component, straight to the tv, or into the amp then tv?....what audio out? optical, digital? also what are you trying to view? local programming? cable/sat? dvd? your best bet is to ignore video on the amp and go straight to tv. can't help u more until i have more specifics.

If you receiver doesn't have phono inputs, you will need to buy an inline phono amplifier.Phono inputs have a built in amplifier, all others don't.Try Crutchfield.com.If they don't carry them, they will tell you who does.
