System says it has the most updated driver but will not "start".

try this ..
you must start regedit ( start -> run [See screenshots at the bottom] Type here: regedit )
search the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
search for "4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318"
if you doesn't find anything, search only for a part of the string.
now search the propertys UpperFilter an LowersFilter and kill the value. If only one prop. is there, you must kill only the one value
on my laptop it works!!

Run this following fx and then restart the notebook, the DVD drive will start working normally.

Try running System Restore to a day just before this failed. It's a software issue according to other forum posts elsewhere.

I assume you are getting error code 10 which means DEVICE CANNOT START. For solving this use your driver CD, supplied with the DVDRAM. And check from device manager that the device is enabled.
