1997 Ford Taurus gets a little hot while driving. Afraid to drive long distances.

A little backstory: Basically i forgot to put the radiator cap back on when I put water in it and when I drove it for a few miles, the car stalled out on me. Somebody had told me beforehand that the car was overheating cuz it was dripping water while on the highway, but I couldn't see the temp gauge get hotter so I thought I had just overfilled it. When it stopped, i couldn't get it started again even after I tried filling it up with water. Only when I jumped it could i drive again. However, besides having a hard time starting the car, and besides the belt squealing like crazy, the temp gauge goes up passed the halfway mark when I drive for more than a few miles (yes it's got water). I

Try burping the cooling system a few times or could be your thermostat. as far as the belt squeek, you can take a litle bit on silicone grease and put it on the belt in one spot with the car off. let it run for a little bit and the squeek should stop

SOURCE: engine overheats when heater pipes connected

I think you could be right about there being air trapped in the system.
Or the heater core(radiator) is plugged.
Either way you need a pressurized radiator coolant pump to put the coolant in without air being trapped.
Although,i have seen it done by jacking the vehicle up high enough that the radiator was now higher than the heater core level, and then the coolant was put in.
But this is dangerous to try.

SOURCE: Temp gauge goes up and down

first i would purchase a new radiator cap 15 lbs 16 lb capacity cost about $7..then you must let car cool completely...now check radiator coolant level.. top off if it needs it. Now install new cap..let car warm up normally and after it get to normal temp range or higher put hand on upper radiator hose..it should feel hot and when you squeeze it you should feel a slight back pressure..this will mean that the thermostat and water pump are working correctly. if not either the thermostat you purchased is defective or your pump may not be working properly.
when you use just water in an engine the boiling point becomes 212 when you add the correct amount of antifreeze, depending on where you live, the boiling point will go up to 240 degrees. Make sure you put in the correct amount of mix.50/50 will usually work well. sometimes when a gauge does max out like that it could just be trapped air. if after you checked all this out and no air is trapped in the system, i would think that you may have a bad temp sensor. let me know if this helped thanks.

How hot does it get in degrees F? Does the cooling fan turn on? Is the coolant boiling over?
As far as your temp gage, maybe you have air in the system? I would think as far as you have driven, if you didn't bleed the system, it should have worked it's way out?
You could have combustion gasses getting into the coolant because of gasket issue?

1999 Ford Taurus keeps running hot

Does it get hot mainly when parked or stopped at a red light or does it get hot even when the car is in motion? If its only when your stopped, the cooling fans are probably not working due to a blown fuse, relay or bad fan motor. If the coolant inside the reservoir seems to boil once the engine gets hot, that can be caused by a defective radiator cap.A blown head gasket will also cause overheating. If you let the engine idle for a few minutes, shut it off, pull all of the spark plugs, see if any plug or two adjacent plugs are wet with coolant, that's a sign of a blown head gasket. If you constantly need to refill the radiator with coolant, that's another sign.

I have 1997 Ford Taurus I put a these itims are new Water Pump, Radaitor, pressure cap, Thermostat, sensor, tested for cracked head and gasket that was good> But still gets hot

check that you put the thermostat in the right way. Body into the water and not the hose. Check that the fan circuit is operational with the fuses and relays operating normally. If it is an auto check the temperature of the transmission oil as it is cooled by the radiator and that will make the car run hot if the oil is over heating from a transmission fault.

I have a 1996 ford explorer and my heater when I first get in and it slightly warmed up the heat works great then as i drive a little the temp gauge goes way up 2 hot then back down to normal and the...

You probably have air in the system. Take off the radiator cap and start the engine. Turn the heater on hot. Let it warm up and fill the radiator as the level drops. Make sure the thermostat opens and coolant is flowing in the radiator. Continue to add coolant until the level stops dropping. Also check for any bleed ports on the hoses or housings where they attach. If you see any bleed ports, crack them open and let any air out. Put the cap back on and see if the heater is working. If this doesn't work, please get back to me.

Radiator overflow steaming when driving 15 to 20 mile distance, don't have a manual to see if there is another location to put in radiator fluid or water, temp is normal, and nothing seems to be leaking,...

Yes, the cap could be it. But, I would also check the strength and concentration of the antifreeze/coolant to make sure it's 50/50.

Also, check that the fan is coming on for the radiator, even though it may seem to not be overheating.

Good luck on this repair.

Cooling System Problems 1999 Ford Taurus

My friend had a 1999 taurus and had the same problem, his coolant would leak from around the overflow bottle because the system was backing up. His problem was a partially plugged radiator. I know this probably isnt the news you wanted to hear, but I'm pretty sure thats going to be your problem. sounds like you've replaced everthing else short of the radiator and water pump. Good thing is i remember him saying it was reasonalbly priced, so good luck.
