I have a 2008 John Deere X304 with a 17hp Kawasaki engine. The problem is this: On cold start the engine cranks up immediately and runs smooth. When engaging the PTO a few moments later the blades come on at full speed. After mowing for about 30 minutes, if I stop the PTO for any reason (empty the bagger, etc) and then try to re-engage it, the mower rpm's will drop as it labors to fully engage the blades. This will go on for 30 to 60 seconds. Then, all of the sudden the engine will kick back to full power and the blades will as well. This condition will continue unless I shut the mower down to cool off. Also, it does this whether I have the mowing deck on or the snow blower attachment. I have been to the John Dealer twice. They have replaced the fuel pump then the PTO clutch, but condition still exists. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on what else to replace / do? Thank you
Hi, check your belt tension, check all idler pulleys and drive pulleys for free rotation with the belt off and finally check that the belt is not bottoming out in any of the drive pulleys. If so, replace the belt. The blades should come up to speed imediately wether hot or cold and it sounds like your belt is slipping in one or more of the pulleys which drags the motor revs down until it grips. Regards Phil.
Hi Phil. Thank you very much for the suggestion. This condition has beeg going on since February 2012 with the John Deere Snow Blower attachment and now that summer is here, the John Deere mowing deck.
This weekend, I am going to to follow your check list and then replac the belt if bad. I did have one question for you: Why would this condition exist when I run the JD snower blower attachment? It has a different belt than the mower deck does.?
Either way will post this weekend how the test turns out
Also Phil, how can I tell if the belt is bottoming out in any of the drive pulleys? Thank you again.
Hi Pete, if the blower has no idlers or belts in common with the mower deck I might be on the wrong track, as I believe the main drive pulley has been replaced as part of the pto. You can check belts for bottoming by holding a section of belt in a straight line through any part of a pulley and making sure you can see daylight between the bottom of the pulley and the bottom of the belt. It's hard to diagnose without hearing it. It may be dropping a cylinder if its a twin or it may be tight in the valve clearances. Regards Phil.

make sure the battery is fully charged, check all electrical connections and clean them with vinegar and rinse well with demineralized water afterward.
SOURCE: i have a f725 john deere mower and the mower has
Sounds like you may have a safety switch shutting down the PTO. Check them all as there may be a loose connection.
SOURCE: John Deere 160 riding mower. When I try to engage
CK THE SEAT SWICH OR THE BRAKE SWICH ONE OFEM IS BAD
SOURCE: engine cutting off after engaging the pto (mower deck) JD 317
its likely to be a switch playing you up try hard wireing the switch to see if it stops this cutting out first, do one switch at a time till you fine the one playing up
