Hello;
The Ford motors are pretty good. I had 280K on a 2.9 V-8 that only needed the oil changed every 3K. Unless you have fluctuatuation in the timing then you should be ok.
These engines use a chain rather than a belt and have excellent life.
Thanks;

if you did not set a code then the timing is not off. Use a data scanner to check it. What makes you think the timing is off ??

I have a clinking sound (metal on metal) coming from the motor compartment while idling

Assuming the oil level is correct, you don't say which engine you have. If you have the SOHC 4.0L V6 (VIN E), the timing chain guides may be broken and the chain has a great deal of slack. It is a common problem with timing chain guide cartridges on those SOHC V6s. Unfortunately, without you stating whether it is the 4.0L V6 or 4.6L V8, it is hard to give you a better answer.

How do I change the Timing Chain close to the sidewall on the driver's side of the engine?

If thie engine in your explorer is the v6 4.0 I found this information online - You are not supposed to need to replace the timing chain(s) on a 4.0L SOHC V6. There are actually a total of FOUR, on this particular engine. This is a job that I would NOT recommend anyone even thinking of attempting to replace, if it's by anyone other than a FORD DEALER TECHNICIAN FAMILIAR WITH DIASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY OF 4.0L SOHC V6 ENGINES. The reason for this is because, this particular engine is an interference engine BIG TIME!!! There are NO timing marks on this particular engine. They require FIVE dedicated Ford/Rotunda tools to service.

2000 ford explorer sport 4x4 timing timing chain rattling. have heard that changing to a synthetic 5w30 oil with wix filter will quieten it down. any feedback or experience on this ? It is the 4.0 sohc...

A change of oil may help, but problem likely due to a combination of stretched timing chain and worn anti rattle chain tensioner.
If noise persists, a new chain and checks to tensioner would be worthwhile.

2000 4.0 sohc explorer cold start erratic, almost stalls levels off at 900 rpms, no codes,replaced iac.- iat, tps,ect,ckp,cmp sensores within spec. timing chains rattle at start up HEELP!!!!

timing chains rattle at start up HEELP!!!! <<<<< This Will NOT Set A Code And WILL Cause EP Engine Performance Problems, If the Timing Chain DEVIATES More than 8 Degrees it is NO GOOD for OPTIMUM Engine performance.
The Fact that you have NO CODES Lieves DIAGNOSING it Fairly Simple. Morning Starts (COLD START) is a CLOSED LOOP Condition and by the time it warms up it closes LOOP and the ECM takes over the Timing, and compisates for the LOOSNESS of the Timing Chain by ADVANCING / RETARDING the Timing. thus Good Running when Warmed up. Hope & I Wish you Good Luck with it.

98 Explorer timing chain?

If this is a SOHC 4.0 V6 then there is a recall on the tensioners for the timing chain, they cause the kind of noise you speak of, check with ford, this is the SOHC only.
