Before you replace it check the wires on the old on mine broke one inch from the clutch but you only need to remove the center bolt then it pulls off but when you but it back make sure its locked into the part that holds it from turning

SOURCE: I have an LT1042 Cub

The clutch fails because one of its components overheats and the electrical contact is broken. The most likely part to fail is the clutch itself and that is easy to check: just pull the relay out and short it with a thick wire .
If that fixes it then you need a new relay - replace it

If you still have problem the clutch is near its end of life. Just buy a new one - you will find it in this page, at about 2/3

SOURCE: When I engage the PTO clutch, the amp light comes

You need to repair either repair a poor connection from the alternator[stator], or replace the rectifier/regulater.Some systems have a inline fuse check that first.

SOURCE: PTO knob will no longer operate cutting blade

Under the hood, there is a relay switch that is taped to the fuse. In my experience, the relay has gone bad and need to be replaced.

Rider will not turn over more than once no matter how many times I try.

I sounds like there's significant resistance to the engine turning over. I experienced this when the electric PTO/clutch seized - and the mower was trying to turn over the engine AND the mower blades because the PTO wasn't disengaging. Try taking the mower belt off the PTO and see how the engine turns over. If it's still slow, the problem is in the engine. If it spins normally, replace the PTO clutch. BTW - when my clutch seized, it also burned out the PTO switch. The switch is pretty inexpensive, so if you're replacing the PTO/clutch (I found one online for about $175.00 - MUCH more expensive at the dealership) - you should probably replace the switch as well.

Cub Cadet LT1042 PTO keeps shutting off after mowing several feet, will turn right back on but keeps shutting off

I have a Cub Cadet 1605 and it does the same exact thing. Try the PTO switch on the dash. I replaced mine and it works fine. Hope this helps.

Pto keeps shutting off after several feet

This is either the clutch relay, or the clutch is out of adjustment

I have a 2005 Cub Cadet LT1042, Spec. No. PS-SV590-0003, but my parts manual also lists part numbers for the LT1045. The clutch part no. given for your model is 717-04174.

PTO engages, but, keeps becoming disengaged on LT1042.

Cub Cadets have one of two types of PTOs. The most common is gear driven. The gear teeth of the PTO shaft are very small and thin. If the PTO is engaged without proper clutch action, the gear teeth grind together, trying to engage. A little wear on these gears will cause the surface of the gears to become beveled, and when the PTO comes under load, the beveled surfaces of the gear teeth force the gear lock to disengage. The only option is to replace the worn gears...

The second type of PTO drive is electric clutch. This is a disc type clutch that is engaged by energizing an electromagnet built into the clutch pack... any disruption of electrical power to the clutch pack while under load will cause the clutch to disengage and then possibly try to engage while under load and casues the clutch pack to slip and will overheat almost instantly...

I have no power to the pto on my LT1042 mower I found broken wires and fixed the but still no power. Where are the fuses that would blow? I only found one fuse and its ok

Did you check for power at the pto switch? Start with checking that, then check the wire from the PTO switch to see if it has power all the way to the PTO clutch. If there is power to the clutch, and the belt is good and routed properly it's probably the PTO clutch.

Check your mower deck spindles and belt. If belt is slipping at all the PTO will not engage.
