I know this might sound unrelated but i noticed the same problem solved by chance when i changed the actual engine oil. i drained engine oil thoroughly (overnight) and changed filter. after running it a couple of times the orange arrow stays off, this problem reoccurs once the engine oil ages so i change my oil and filter every 5000kms. my guess is that some sort of censor reacts to the old oil as i'm not sure how the two are related.

I have a 94 isuzu rodeo v-6. 3.2 automatic. Trans . I replaced it with a 93 automatic trans. And it will not engage in any gears any thoughts to what it might be .?

is if full of Dexron VI now? TO THE COLD MARK?
and after startup, in park, it holds the cold mark?
then rises to the hot mark.>?
so the old trans was dead, so you bought another used, trans, that is 21 years old and expect it to work great? ok....
and did you drop the pan, and replace the filter?
the pump can suck Dexron VI through a packed filter.
and while the pans is do you have the shift soleniods here.
if yes your trans has a TCM and does all shifting,
but manual mode would work if, TCM is unplugged.

so if you manually move the side shift lever. to drive, Lo or reverse
the car will not move. im I right.? (false neutrals?) right?
why not say what it does.. not just (not engage) (creeps in gear?)
does the transmission act likes its in neutral? and RPM rises fast with right foot and car fails to move?
don't use the shift lever, use the transmission side lever. to prove the trans is failing
94 rodeo.... first i must look up what trans is there.
there are 2 types. (hyradmatic, and TCM electronic)
see? and many car makes have both types same year, yes,,, that makes for online help near impossible. lacking the side plate
numbers on the ORIGINAL trans..... a fact !!!

all answers are USA cars. (USA forum it is)
I will now quote the FSM (factory serv. man.) book facts for 1994
The 4L30-E transmission, the E means , electronically shifted.
needs a working TCM to shift all gears automatically.
tcm = transmission control module, (can be by self or part of PCM)

did you adjust the shifter like the book?
see bottom photo.
if reverse is dead, then the below is set wrong or trans is bad.
(or lacks proper fluid level or the filter is packed.)
the lever is held at N, with a rubber band
and the mech, adjusts the trans lever to N.
(standard steps on all a/T boxes)

25722445-2f5dzn2kvqcmxgnp5h420nyp-5-0.jpg next clues.

this is the French GM trans in your car.
its electronically shifted. if not, its a true Hyrdamatic.
25722445-2f5dzn2kvqcmxgnp5h420nyp-5-1.jpg

25722445-2f5dzn2kvqcmxgnp5h420nyp-5-3.jpggot those 3 solenoids. is the connector below , connected?

my best advice, get reverse to work first...
that is 100% hydramatic mode. (lever to R , at drivers hand and lever at trans in R detent !!!

Ford escord zx2 5 speed manual trans linkage layout

My wife's 5 speed manual ZX2 has had shifting problems but they are somewhat intermittant. I think it may be the bushings on the shifter rod one pair at the bottom of the shift lever and one where it connects to the transmission shift rod.
I can see a good deal of slack motion at the transmission end of the rod by looking at it under the hood with a flashlight while she wiggles the shift lever a bit.

How can i add transmission fluid to my 2001 vw golf,,auto trans.

THE 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find one threaded plug on below surface, (follow red arrow in the picture below). This is for emptying.

tdisline_432.jpg

The oil level threaded plug is placed on the car front lateral automatic gearbox surface, (follow yellow arrow in the picture below).

tdisline_433.jpg

The filling oil plug is placed on the upper automatic gearbox surface, (follow green arrow in the picture below).

tdisline_434.jpg
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking:
1. Requirements for check:
1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface.
1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.
1.7. Automatic gearbox oil capacity: 2,5 liter. Only ATF with VW designation may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives.
1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.

HAVE A 1989 FORD F-150 WITH AUTO TRANS THAT YOU CAN'T SHIFT OUT OF THE "PARK" POSITION AT THE STEERING COLUMN. THE TRANY CAN BE SHIFTED AT THE TRANS WHEN LINKAGE IS DICONNECTED.I THINK THE...

What trans? AOD? This is 1992 F Series, all I have.

Shift Controls, Automatic Transmission The transmission shift control linkage or cable transfers the transmission operating mode from the selector lever to the transmission. The indicated transmission position on the steering column is transferred to a shift lever on the bottom of the steering column. On vehicles equipped with cable-operated shift systems, the indicated position of the transmission selector lever is transferred to the transmission through the shift cane, then to the cable, and down to the transmission manual shift lever at the transmission. On vehicles equipped with shift rod assemblies, the rod transfers the indicated transmission selector level position through a bell crank assembly to a control rod. The control rod transfers the indicated position to the transmission assembly.
----------------------------------------------
Automatic Transmission Manual Linkage Adjustments
  1. With the engine stopped and the parking brake applied, place the transmission selector lever at the steering column in the D (DRIVE position) for C6 applications and in the (D) (OVERDRIVE position) for AOD and E4OD applications, and hold against the D or (D) stop by applying a three-pound force to the selector lever knob.
  1. Loosen the shift rod adjusting nut at point A. Refer to the following illustrations.
  1. Shift the manual lever at the transmission into the (D) (overdrive) position for E4OD, by moving the lever all the way rearward, then forward two detents.
  1. With the selector lever and transmission manual lever in the(D) position, tighten the nut at point A to 17-24 Nm (12-18 ft-lb) torque. Use care to prevent motion between the stud and rod.
  1. Remove the three-pound force from the steering column selector lever knob.
  1. Operate the shift lever in all positions to make certain that the manual lever at the transmission is in full detent in all gear ranges. Re-adjust the linkage if required.
  1. On F-Super Duty Chassis Cab and Motorhome and Commercial Chassis recheck for correct operation of the automatic transmission selector indicator (PRN(D)21). Refer to Section 11-04A, Steering Column, Shift Rod Within Tube. ani_caut.gif CAUTION: Under no circumstances will it be permissible to adjust linkage in any position other than the(D) position for E4OD applications.
---------------------
Automatic Transmission Shift Cable Adjustment
  1. From inside the vehicle, place the column shift select lever in the DRIVE position (C6) of the OVERDRIVE (AOD and E4OD). Hang a three-pound weight on the selector lever.
  1. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
  1. Remove the shift cable from the transmission lever ball stud.
  1. Pull down the lock tab on the shift cable body.
  1. Position the transmission shift lever in the DRIVE position (C6) or the OVERDRIVE position (AOD and E4OD). This is three detents from the front-most lever position with the first position counting as one.
  1. Connect the cable end fitting to the transmission lever ball stud.
  1. Push up on the lock tab to lock the cable in the correctly adjusted position.
  1. Lower vehicle down from hoist and remove the three-pound weight from the column shift select lever.
  1. After making the adjustment, check for park engagement. Check the transmission control lever in all detent positions with the engine running to make sure correct detent/transmission actions. Readjust if necessary.

1999 ford gear handles moves but won't select gear and the car is still in park

Two things happen. On collum shift cars and trucks the bolts work loose out of the shift lever to the cable under the dash where the shift cable connects to the steering collum. the cable connects to a lever that is connected the the shift tube ( part of the steering collum ) bolt heads are 30 torx. the other thing that happens is the cable comes off the trans mission lever and it just snaps on. The bushing waers out and the cable just comes off the pin on the lever coming out of the transmission. Front wheel drive cars it's on the top and rear wheel and trucks it's on the side ( happens less on these and then the cable can break it'self, and the shift cable has to be replaced sometimes if the bushing in the end fails at the transmission end.

Reverse is rough, with intermittent grabbing, not slippage. I have replaced both s1 and s2 solenoids but dash light arrow still flashes. Prior to replacing the solenoids the transmission was in limp mode...

It sounds as if the seals are bad in your transmission and they are allowing fluid to slip past them. This results in the transmission not completely engaging in gear and being extremely slow to shift into gear.

You can try a few capfuls of break fluid in the tranny. This will swell the seals and allow them to seal better. This is not a permanant fix however, this will only temporarily get your tranny working for an undertermined amount of time. I used this fix on a turbo trans 350 and I got about a year of life out of it.

Beyond that I believe you may be looking at a tranny rebuild or replacement.
