I just turned on my car after being out of town for a few days and it made a loud knocking sound and the service engine light is on. It has never made this sound before. It's not the weather.

I turned it off, went in the house to have my mom listen and it took several tries to turn it back on. The second time the knocks were slightly quieter and faster. It has about 75,000 miles, has had about half of the 60,000 mile maintenance. I've gotten regular oil changes and am due for one now, but not overdue.

Alot of times when you let a car sit for a while, the oil will slowly drain down into the oil pan. When you start the engine, the knocking you hear is all the metal parts flying around, waiting for the oil pump to start spraying the oil everywhere. If you start it back up, let it run for a minute and listen for the noise to quieten down, it should eventually go away. You can help prevent the dry start as you are having by using good synthetic oil, and sometimes adding in LUCAS oil treatment.

Look in your owners manual. It will tell you the correct procedure for reseting the light. Doesn't anybody read these anymore?

SOURCE: My Audi a6 has 75 000 miles, what are the major maintenance

find a SPECIALIZED Audi mechanic with his own / family business ( NOOOO DEALERS !!!!!!) which may give 3 references - customers. After that, the only thing you should care would be the regular oil service. Splendid car, mine drove like a dream until the dealership f****d its engine.

Knocking than oil light on just change filter and oil

Your engine is gone. Replace or rebuild. If your car is old, junk it. Time for a new one.

My wife drove the mini van when it was low or almost out of oil. now the engine makes a loud knocking sound.......is the engine blown or is there a possible fix, to save the engine?

Knocking means you're still low on oil. Try have an oil and filter change. If your engine is blown, you won't hear or feel it cause it's seized. A dying engine from oil starvation would make screeching metal to metal noise. Yours sounds more like a stuck cam follower from oil starvation.

My 04 Town & Country has a loud Knock in the motor

Why did the engine get hot? Coolant loss? Was the oil level too low before more was added? If it was low, how many quarts should have been added? I believe you have serious engine problems. Too much oil is as bad as too little. What happens when it is overfilled, is the oil 'foams', causing a lack of lubrication of internal components. Oil in a foamy state will not lubricate properly. I believe what you hear is a crankshaft or rod bearing that is now damaged. If I'm correct, you need to replace the engine. Sorry for the bad news.
