If your restore partition is ruined you will need either borrow an operating cd from a friend with same OS or buy the cd from HP. If its still under warrenty HP will reimage the hard drive free.

did you mean format the hard disk and then install the operating system.?
press F10 to enter the bios setup, then set the boot sequence to cd rom first.
insert your windows cd into the cd rom.
save settings and restart. after the computer restarts it will detect that you enter cd then press enter.
the next process is the usual kind of format and install your operating system.

You can perform a recovery from the partition on the hard drive from either the Start button or F11.

To restore the system from the partition, follow these steps:

1) Access Recovery Manager in either of the following ways:
- Select Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager.
- or -
Restart the computer and press F11 while the "Press for recovery" message is displayed
on the screen. Then select Recovery Manager.
2) Recovery Manager opens.
3) Click Advanced Options.
4) Click System recovery, and then click Next.
5) Follow the on-screen instructions.

most Compaq's come with a hidden recovery partition accessed by pressing a f10 or similar key during the Compaq bios screen the easiest way of finding out is to go to the Compaq website and entering your model in the support section.

From the description loo\ks like it's not a partition problem, but the Compaq CD.
Try to partition Hard Drive using Windows 98 bootable CD.
Try to install Win XP from different CD - doesn't have to be Compaq. Later you can download drivers.

If that's a brand new model damroo, the recovery cd should be a software that you can click on the desktop, it should say something like HP PC System Recovery or something similar. For a complete guide, try checking this out. It should be similar in making recovery cd on XP/Vista.

hiya do you know if you have a recovery partition? if so pressing f12 on startup enters the recovery partition, the down side is if this does work you will lose everything as it will be back to factory settings

Insert the recovery disc, included with your laptop when you unpacked it, reboot the laptop and follow the instruction.

If your laptop came with a recovery partition, restart it and hit F8 function key while it is booting up. This should bring up a menu, select the recovery option.

using a Windows XP CD, boot from it, wipe the HDD clean(also make new partitions) and reinstall Windows...that should help you on the virus issue as well...when u recreate partitions, the virus is deleted.
