Does your battery have a large spark when you connect or disconnect it? A small spark may appear. A large spark would be a large drain.
There should be a wire from the starter or a junction block that goes to the plug on the alternator. It is a voltage sensing wire. It is also a fusible link. If the wire is not melted away (thats how they work as a fuse) it may be corroded inside the white (or black) plastic connector.
Remove the plug from the alternator and check the larger wire on it for 12 volts.
The other end of the wire will go to either the starter or a junction block on the firewall or near the battery.
Look for these
Don't just look at them, give a little tug to see if they pull out of the bu-tt connector

And you can go to Autozone.com and they have free wire diagrams in the repair section.autozone told me that my wiring for my 93 buick - madmikers_13.jpg

The gauges fuse under the dash powers the idiot lights and gauges. If they are working, you need to check the fusible links.Disconnect the battery then look at the starter. The terminal that the heavy battery cable bolts to also has 2-3 other wires bolted to it give each wire a moderate pull,if any stretches easily the link is burnt. When a large short occurs the link will burn out but the insulation usually still looks fine.Make sure to replace it with the same size fusible wire.

1999 Buick Regal starting problems

Connect a volt meter to the neg. and pos. of the battery. Have an assistant start your car and watch to see how far the voltage drops. If it drops more than 2 volts, for example, hook up the meter, you should see 12 volts. By starting the car and it drops below 10 volts during start up, your starter is slowly going out. It taking more amperage to start it than normal.

Somerset Alternator

the voltage regulator is internal on that alternator. Take the alernator back off and take it autozone or advance and have them bench test it to see if its good or not. That model car doesnt have a fuse for the alternator either and the regulator is internal on that model. Thats a standard sg gm alternator. those above stores do not charge for testing it for you. another quick way if you have a volt meter is black end of volt meter to the negative battery cable and the postive end of the meter to the thick red wire on the alternator that you had to put the nut on. then with car running that should show 13 to 14 volts. If not, suspect that alternator. But try the free check on it before going through too much more grief with that. if you had it tested. take the whole car to the autostore and ask them to check it while the car is running, Autozone and advance both have the machine they will take out to the car and check it for free. Otherwise, get a volt meter and check it as I said. If the alternator is putting out, then you have a bad cable or the 'field' wire is bad.
