CHECK TO SEE IF THE BOLT HOLDING THE DISC TO SANDER IS NOT LOOSE.

Checked the net for answers and got a couple of maybe's. 1.) Brushes, 2.) variable speed control, which some were direct wiring.
I tried the brushes firs and that has solved the problem for now. I guess the brushes stuck or somehow lost contact.
I got a parts diagram and found the brushes (will be covered with dust). Took the springs out and stretched them a little, replaced and the sander turned on. You will need to remove the top cover to do this. Verdit is still out as to long term performance. Not a great start.

My particular sander was lightly used (second project) and it has not been abused.

check the board with the variable speed control knob, mine failed once and would not power on. I believe I started having the same problem for the second time today.

this site does not have or sell parts. Manufacturers do not red this looking for sales. Parts are available on line from many vendors.

All the other answers are wrong. You get a wrench with the sander. It's thin so it fits between the pad and sander to hold the nut in place while you unscrew the pad.

There are a number of reasons why a belt sander will fail to track - Poor quality belts. Physical damage (dropped). Uneven wear of rubber drive roller. When one becomes troublesome it can take a deal of sorting. Best idea if there is no obvious reason is to start by trying an OE belt.

Just to clarify ..the bearing at the bottom nearest to the sanding pad is good? Also does it just stop and make a humming sound when in use ?

Isn't this a random orbital sander.

Make sure that you have a good set of brushes in there. If so and it continues to happen then the motor is no longer drawing the amount of current it needs to function properly, because it should not slow down like that.
