I have a gateway that has been having a dc jack issue
I have been living with this problem for 5 months now.
The first thing I suggest is to plucg in your laptop then pull the cord under your laptop tug it towards you if you are able to obtain a connection use your laptop to hold the cord. Thats what I am doing now
If that does not work find the spot where you can connect ( by tugging cord back and forth or up and down) and hold the connection with tape or a clamp.
Gateway MX6440 heat sink failure
Check your BIOS settings when the PC starts, this can be accomplished by pressing F2 or Delete (depending on your model) when in your Bios check the power settings for CPU options such as SMART CPU and other variations. Most newer laptops and desktops have temp sensors that regulate fan speeds, thus saving energy and prolonging the lifespan of your fan, let me know if this helps you out
I need to replace the keyboard on an MX6440 laptop
There is no 100 percent true way of telling you online how to get this computer open I would advise if all the scews are out of the thing on the bottom then you need a plastic wedge to help the case open its latches.
Sometimes a little prying is in order but not with metal use a plastc wedge. When in doubt let a expert do it for you. Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

Power adapter loose - worth fixing?
FIrst of all, amyone charging $30 for a replacement jack is ripping you off. These parts are available for less than $2 each and are common parts. Unless the jack has been damaged, it shouldn't need to be replaced. I repair this type of problem all the time, and usually it takes longer to get to the jack than it does to repair it. A reasonable charge for this would be $80-$120 for labor (this process takes over an hour easy) and a few bucks for parts. Where are you located?

No Sound!

My computer will not charge.
It could be something internally inside the computer, It could also be the power adapter also. Try using another power adapter to see if it will charge with the power adapter...or it could be the battery itself. If you have a warranty with the computer call the warranty company as they usually will fix the problem whether it's a piece of the hardware inside the computer, or if it's the power adapter will send another power adapter, if it's the battery they will send you another battery.
Gateway MX6440 will not power on
If you are not getting any power indication lights on the front of the laptop with the AC adapter plugged in, then you most likely have a faulty DC jack. Luckily, that sort of issue can be fixed, and it is not TOO expensive. Our company typically does DC jack repairs for about $100.
How much ram can i put in a Gateway MX6440
for most computers, a 2 gb will do. for the processor, depending on the architecture it has, will depend if it is possible to change it (e.g. if you have lga 440, then it is not possible for a pinless processor to fit in.
\windows\system32\config\system missing or corrupt
You can do a refresh of your Windows OS, if you have Windows XP. You need to boot to your XP CD and do a repair. This will only restore the Windows OS files and you will not lose your personal data.
This should help. please rate my response.
Gateway Mx6440 Sound Problems, installed Vista
Did you download and install this particular driver from Gateway:
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?ref=step&st=browse&platform=10022&model=10773&os=10954&type=10096
This is the specific Vista driver for your computer. If you have been trying others, your hardware probably will not work. Hardware compatibility is an issue with upgrading to Vista. You need to make sure you are getting the right drivers from the device manufacturer, and sometimes you might find none available.
