Ask a friend or neighbor or relative who has an alarm for their "hold-up" or "panic" or "Duress" code (they all mean the same thing) since most are the same (or in reverse). Check means it is not seeing the smoke detector. This usually means a broken wire or even a nail or staple through the wire. Does the smoke detector use two or 4 wires?

1234 is the new master code, 4112 is the installer code to get into programming. If you defaulted the panel, all previous zone programming is lost as well as reporting methods and types for those zones. Basically it's set back to the way it came out of the box!

What type of panel is it? Do you have the manuals?

i dont think it polarity not unless alarms in the usa are different from nz aus uk sounds like you have a faulty something. try open and closing the front door and look at the keypad to see if the zone activates as it should. there can only realy be 3 things. device, cable or panel fault. you can easly test the system by swaping the zones in the panel ie zone 1 to 2 and 2 to 1 providing that they have similar zone charectorists ie "entry exit" if the fault moves to the other zone you know its a device fault.(inspecting the cable for damage is probably the easy thing to do) if its a reed switch you could look at the position of the magnet it may be making borderline contact and a slight movement of the door could be tripping the zone. if the fault doesnt move its a panel fault. before you jump in though make sure that if you dont comprimise your protection or insurance by trying DIY security. good luck (if you have no joy post more details)
