4T40E Automatic Transaxle CAUTION
Removal of the fluid level screw when the transaxle fluid is hot may cause injury. Use care to avoid contact of the transaxle fluid to exhaust pipe. The fluid level screw is intended to be used for diagnosing a transaxle fluid leak or resetting the transaxle fluid level after service that involves a loss of fluid.

  1. The fluid level should be checked when the transaxle is near room temperature or at 104°F (40°C). To acquire this, left the car idle for 3-5 minutes with all of the accessories off. Fig. 5: Location of the fluid level screw and the fill/vent cap needed to check the fluid for the 4T40E automatic transaxle how to check trasmission fluid no dipstick just a - 87951085.gif

  2. Apply the brake, then move the gear shift selector through all gear ranges, pausing three seconds in each range. Shift the lever into P.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Place a suitable drain pan under the check plug to catch any fluid that may drip out.
  5. Remove the oil check plug. The oil level should be at the bottom of the oil check hole. Because the transaxle operates correctly over a range of fluid levels, fluid may or may not drain out of the screw hole when the screw is removed.
  6. If fluid drains through the screw hole, the transaxle may have been overfilled. When fluid stops draining, then fluid level is correct and the check plug may be installed. If fluid does not drain through the screw hole, the transaxle fluid may have been low. Add fluid at the vent cap location in 1 pint increments until the oil level is at the bottom of the oil check hole.
  7. Install the oil check plug/fluid level screw and tighten to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  8. Carefully lower the vehicle.

The newer models of most cars don't have a dipstick for ATF. They require you to go in to the dealership to check and replace fluids

I have a 1996 VW Jetta and don't know how to check/add trasmission fluid. I am at a loss and don't want to attempt the long drive to the dealership. What can I do????

You check the trans fluid while the engine is running. The dipstick will be going into the trans. When you pull the dipstick out wipe it, put it back in then pull it back out. There will be an area of xxxxx or /////. This is your safe area. Use the same spout the dipstick goes in to fill with trans fluid by using a funnel.

1996 mitsubishi eclipse manual trans wondering where to fill it thanks

You add and check the Transmision level at the dipstick location, remove the dipstick and use a funnel to add trasmission fluid, the vehicle should be running and at operating temperture as you check the fluid level for a proper reading.

I have a chevrolet malibu 2000 i can't find the transmission dipstick. how do i know it is time to add transmission fluid?or how to check it?

Hello Arlene.
On your Malibu there is no dipstick provided.
To check it there is a plug near the bottom of the transmission on the left side that needs to be removed and checked for level. It should be level with the bottom of the opening.
There is a red cap at the top to be removed to add to the level if necessary.
Not sure what the wisdom of this was on General Motors part but it sure is a pain.

How do you check the transmission fluid level. I don't see a dipstick, only a red fill cap?

There is no dipstick so you can't check it.When you get an oil change have them check tranny fluid. It's the only solution I've heard.

Changing radiator

Does the car have a transmission dipstick? Look on the passenger side of the engine compartment towards the firewall to find the dipstick tube. If it has a dipstick there will be a square top on it with a locking mechanism. Run car to normal operating temerature, unlock the dipstick pull it out wipe it off push it back in and pull it back out then look to see if the fluid is between the marks. If not just add fluid through the tube.  If you don't have a dipstick there will be a smaller cap with  red plastic lock on it. You will have to break the red lock to get the cap off. There is a special tool from Mercedes to check the level on these non dipstick units. If you think it is low then add 1 quart and road test for proper operation and shifting.

NEED HELP 2007 dodge caliber

It only has the tube, the dealership has a dipstick to check it. It has to be checked with a scan tool hooked to the vehicle so they can read trans fluid temp. This is why you no longer get the dipstick with the car
