Recently my 2000 FLSTC 88B has been sputtering and backfiring. Is it time for a carb rebuild or exchange. 12,000 miles on it.

Don't jump to the expensive fixes first.Lets go to the obvious little culprit the sparkplugs.pull these guys out and take a look. Are they clean ,oily, carbonfouled, heatglazed,or sooty.these conditions will point to your problem.First change the plugs;I'm betting the 12,000 miles have been on this set.Start up that puppy and see how she runs.Yes,no ,Check the choke when she warms up,is it disengaging .Check also the header pipe flanges. Are they tight or leaking Some modelsare effected by this,Check your fuel fiter and replace if there is any doubt at all...Hopefully this has given you a starting place and again do not spend the big bucksuntil you have eliminated the [in your face] items that you can rectify..

Backfiring on decel

If this is a new condition and you've not worked on the bike recently, I'd try a dose of StarTron in the gas tank. It will eat the sludge that grows in fuel systems exposed to gasohol. Put it in the tank, ride a few miles to get it into the carbs, and then let it sit overnight. It has special enzymes in it that do the job. Seafoam is a good product but is not designed to clear bacterial sludge.

Extreme vibration at 55 or more on a 2000 heritage softail 88b engine

It is probably, of all things, the tires. Check the tread and balance.

Backfire through the exaust and hessitation

Backfire is the result of unburned fuel in the exhaust igniting. I would look at the timing. Could be out enough for this to be the cause. Good starting point in my opinion. Not usually a plug issue.

Engine wont start it backfires through the carb

Make sure the timing is correct. Backfiring is often caused by an engine out of time.
Good idea on the carb rebuild. It may be letting too much gas in.

This mercury is a 1994 V8 equipped. It sputters and and backfires through the breather like it would if it had a carb. It does this for miles even after prior warm up.

I'm having the same problem it sputters and backfires between 0 and 30 then just kicks in and acts normal recently did tune up. Any suggestions? Mine is a 94 grand marquis with a 4.6l v8

I have a 1997 1200s it iS sputtering in the intake like backfireing, the spark plugs are clean no iol foul or wetness present. any suggestions please..

Had your bike sat a long time without being started? Been down real bumpy roads? I worked on a friends 1999 883 Sporty recently, it needed the carb rebuilt. I cleaned out all jets and passages, and float level was reset, it was out of adj.. Also, when diagnosing bike hard starting and backfiring out the air cleaner problem, I found the timing plate had losened up and the timing was off about 7 degrees which I adjusted back to spec before I rebuilt the carb. The plugs were also clean, not dry..Runs Good Now. The shop 1st looked at bike before I did, they said it was an Ignition problem and changed out the key switch which did Not solve problem.
