Sounds like the coil. Had the same problem with a Sportster, changed coil. As coil ages it breaks down, heat expands internal connections and coil fails. When cooled, coil contracts and the contacts come back together. This COULD be your problem, not sure. Do you have a buddy that will let you try his coil for a test?

Although your engine is carburated, it still has an ECM. The engine gets it's timing pulses from a crank position sensor on the left side of the engine. It also has a MAP sensor and several other sensors.

Wheres the engine oil drain plug on 2001 flht

It's on the bottom of the transmission. It's usually the drain plug closet to the front left corner of the oil tank.

sounds to me like you have a loose primary chain, though if your running a mikuni flatslide carburator they are notorious for making what sounds like a lifter tap,
