A good quality semi synthetic 10w40 oil will be fine. Make sure it is specifically for motorcycles. Car oils have anti-friction additives which could cause your clutch to slip.

2005 kawasaki vulcan classic 800 oil type

Owner's manual should have it, If not You can go to a retailer with a power sports lookup input make, model, size and year.
And you will receive recommendations for use in your climate.
Call the service department at your dealer to book an oil change and ask for an estimate, chances are they will mention the type of oil used or options available for your model.
I know Amsoil products, and I know they have a power sports oil/product look up search engine, what you buy is up to you, but it will give you the type and viscosity for yours.

Just bought 02 GC sport, no manual, what type of oil should I use, it's 1 qt. low?

10W - 30 High Detergent -- any reputable brand. Since you don't know what type of oil is in it (synthetic, for example) -- I suggest an oil & filter change, and use that oil for future topping off and oil changes.

Changing and Checking oil/

Underneath your fairing on the side of the engine should be a site glass with the oil level showing in it. It has two marks on it, one good and one low. Make sure the bike is level when you check it. I used to change my oil a lot but I slowed it down to about 4000 miles. It is full synthetic motorcycle oil, that is what you want to use. I would change yours now, so you know it is good, then you can keep track of it. Hope this helps.
