I have a 2002 Yamaha Vmax with 6900 miles and 4 cracked coils. Before I replace them, I'd like to know the static readings I should be getting off of them. Also, any info as to what could cause all 4 to crack with such low mileage, would be much appreciated.

Hi,

The major cause of coils cracking is to much heat.
Either ambient heat like from and engine or internal heat build up caused from to much high voltage being applied to the ignition system.

The second cause is usually from excessive gap in the spark plugs or the incorrect spark plugs been fitted.

I'm not too sure what you mean by static readings so I'm assuming you mean resistance readings which are:

Primary windings: 0.1 - 1.0 ohms
Secondary windings: 1.5 - 3.0 ohms

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

Hi 2000 yamaha Vmax, 4600 miles on the clock.

This sounds like a carburetor problem. Either bad gas, partially plugged pilot jets, carb diaphragm cracked or has a pin hole, carbs out of sync or diaphragm cap is not tight. It would be best to have a dealer check it out. However, before going to the dealer I would try one thing. Drain the float bowls on all four carbs. There is a drain plug on the bottom of each bowl. Condensation inside the gas tank can make it's way into the carb. Bikes don't run well with water in the gas. Please rate my solution. Thanks.

Clutch is slipping is there an adjustment? 1997 royal star

Yamaha has a curved washer style clutch spring that it uses for this model. These have been prone to slipping from day 1. Normally when you get on the throttle hot and heavy. A new spring will help the situation for a while but you may have to replace the clutch pack to get more pressure through out the clutch pack if the bike has high miles on it. Maybe the dealer would know if the VMAX spring is heavier and would work as a replacement.

Could be the coil. Also could be several other things. Download a shop manual and diagnose it.
