Fuel Tank - Removal & Installation CAUTIONDo not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type
when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable
mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these
instructions may result in personal injury. CAUTIONFuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the
engine is not running. Before working on or disconnecting any of the
fuel lines or fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be
relieved. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal
injury.
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Relieve the fuel pressure.
Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe hose and the filler pipe vent tube from the fuel tank.
Position a jack under the fuel tank
Remove the four fuel tank cover strap bolts
Partially lower the fuel tank
Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump.
Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector
On gasoline fuel tanks, disconnect the hose(s) from the evaporative emission valve.
Lower the fuel tank
If a new fuel tank is being installed, transfer the necessary components to the new fuel tank.
To install, reverse the removal procedure and note the following:
Tighten the fuel tank strap bolts to 98 ft. lbs. (133 Nm).

tolerances and fine clearances. It is therefore essential that absolute
cleanliness is observed when working with these components. Always
install blanking plugs to any open orifices or tubes.
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
Release the fuel system pressure.
Drain the fuel tank.
If equipped, remove the four nuts and the fuel tank skid plate.
Disconnect the two vapor tubes at the rear of the fuel tank
Disconnect the vapor tube and the fuel filter outlet tube forward of the fuel tank. NOTEDo not support the fuel tank directly beneath the fuel pump mounting area. Damage to the fuel pump assembly can occur.
Position a suitable jack under the fuel tank. NOTEThe location of the fuel vent hose is critical to fuel system operation. Note the routing of the fuel vent hose at this time.
Remove the two bolts and the fuel tank front and rear support
straps. Lower the front of the fuel tank approximately 1 inch. (25 mm).
Disconnect the vent tube from the fuel pump module.
Disconnect the fuel pump module and fuel pressure transducer electrical connectors.
Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
To install, reverse the removal procedure and note the following:
For 2005 models if removed, tighten the fuel tank skid plate bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). For 2006 models 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
For 2005 models tighten fuel tank strap bolts to 35 ft. lbs. (47
Nm). For 2006 models tighten strap bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
Fuel Pump - Removal & Installation
CAUTIONFuel injection systems remain under pressure, even after the
engine has been turned OFF. The fuel system pressure must be relieved
before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so may result in
fire and/or personal injury.
Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
