Buy a Haynes Workshop Manual for Peugeot 406 1999-2002 PN 3982. Definitely it will help. It is a relatively easy job. Normal, the drive belt is a life time component if you keep the car properly. Mine is 2004 406 Coupe 2.0 auto. The belt is still in top condition.
depending on the year the alternator can have a 13 mm clamp bolt by the 10 mm adjusting bolt, and you need to loosen a 21mm bolt at the top, newer models have a sprung tensioner with a 19 or 21mm square or hex plug sticking out, this will bear an idler wheel, the gap is tight and hard to see what is going on, the spring is v strong and needs a long spanner. Assuming you are in the UK the library will get a manual in to order, keep it clean or they charge you.
You've probably allowed the crankshaft to move while you had the belt off, putting the timing out by a small amount. There will be some kind of marks top and bottom somewhere to align before you put the belt backon. I need to do this preventative maintenance on my 406 2litre diesel - I'm trying to work out how difficult it is!
