"95 Merc. Cougar special edition trans shift very hard and sudden. Shifts through gears fine except hard change both up shifting and down shifting when I stop for a light.
If I romp on the throttle from a start it goes through first fine and when it shifts to second it will spin tires on dry pavement! I want to protect my drive train from damage. I was told that it has a "shift kit" in it and it may be from the factory? Either way I think it shifts to hard. Can it be softened slightly with an external adjustment? Or what do I need to do? Thank you

Shift kits added to automatic transmittions will shift hard, because they heavier duty. Reduce rpm when shifting/ check for high engine idle.
If trouble shifting through various gears, shift grommets/bushings may be worn.

Sounds like a shift solenoid problem. If you have any codes associated with solenoid failure, that is probably what it is. If there are no codes, it is probably something stuck in the valve body or something else mechanical.
Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either
reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh.
All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.
Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC
(Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Easy fix in pan. Fix as
soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.
No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging,
but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to
2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car
shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate
time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem
from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
well if it shifts very hard into every gear that means the pressure control solenoid in the trans went bad and it causing the trans to go to max line pressure thats why it shifts so hard,,,it does that so you can still drive it even thou it broken, anyhow the PC solenoid is under the trans pan which is on the TOP of the trans under the battery,,,,not too hard a job to do, the parts are about $100 labor might be about $200,,,easy fix,,could be alot more,,,and if you dont fix it ,it will break other stuff in the trans and cost alot more,,,
shifts off electric servo controlled by cars computer , see trans guy you can trust could need service ,oil and filter changed or part , like i said see one you can trust .
