SOURCE: HAVE A TROUBLESHOOTING MESSAGE PO446

DTC P0446 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent System Performance

The vehicle control module (VCM) monitors the performance of the evaporative emission (EVAP) system by applying a predetermined level of vacuum to the EVAP system and monitors the vacuum decay rate. The VCM sets this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) if the vacuum decay rate is more than a predetermined value. The VCM monitors the amount of vacuum and the amount of pressure in the EVAP system by monitoring the fuel tank pressure sensor. For this DTC, the VCM turns ON both the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP vent valve when the Conditions for Running the DTC are met. This applies an engine vacuum to a closed EVAP system. The VCM turns OFF both the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP vent valve when the system reaches a correct amount of vacuum. The EVAP system should quickly RELEASE the vacuum in the EVAP system with the EVAP purge valve OFF and the EVAP vent valve OFF (open). This test indicates a blocked or restricted EVAP vent path if the EVAP system fails to release the vacuum quickly enough.

SOURCE: remove fuel pump from tank ford windstar 98

To gain access to the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.

  1. Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  2. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump module attaching flange, to prevent it from entering the tank during service.
  3. Turn the fuel pump module locking ring counterclockwise using a locking ring removal tool or a brass drift and remove the locking ring.
  4. Remove the fuel pump module.
  5. Remove the seal gasket and discard it.

To install:
  1. Put a light coating of grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly. Install it in fuel tank ring groove.
  2. Insert the fuel pump module into the fuel tank, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Tighten the ring until secure.
  3. Install the tank in the vehicle.
  4. Install a minimum of 10 gallons of fuel and check for leaks.
  5. Install a pressure gauge on the throttle body valve and turn the ignition ON for 3 seconds. Turn the key OFF , then repeat the key cycle five to ten times until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 psi.
  6. Check for fuel leaks at the fittings.
  7. Remove the pressure gauge.
  8. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

I have a 2001 ford ranger. I am having trouble filling the gas tank. Vapors won't release and it takes a very long time to fill the tank. Is there a vent valve on the tank?

DEAR Frank,

ABSOLUTELY NOT (and with EXTREMELY good cause).

Your tank is specifically designed
to NOT LET VAPORS escape... If things are working
properly you ought to be hearing a SUCKING SOUND
when you pull off the gas cap...

Here in California... EPA folks go completely homicidal
at the notion of gas fumes (this being the STATE where we have BAY FRONT retirement centers for our GAZILLION deathrow inmates... (folks all queued-up for their last meal)...!!

((I'd spell *****-row correctly... but I don't believe it would get past our PC squads)).

Not only are they (vapors) harmful to the environment...
they are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.

Beg, borrow or BUY the book and read up-on
VAPOR RECOVERY system... (TOTALLY).

Check your charcoal canister is not saturated... and
CONSIDER going to better GAS STATIONS.

Stop by your local FIRE house or US Coast Guard
duty station... And find out first hand how easy it is to strike up a conversation on the EQUIVALENT STICKS of DYNAMITE...
for a single ounce of PROPERLY VAPORIZED gas fumes.

It's all incredibly fast and fatal...
Get yourself completely QUALIFIED before you
create a serious disaster!!

Better still... hire a qualified (CERTIFIED) professional.

I cant get more then 1 gallon of gas in my fuel tank on my 2000 ford windstar what could be wrong?

ive seen this happen on new cars , but not on a 2k model , but might be same cause , if you do a code check you might see a vac canister fail on the readout , all new cars have a vapor recovery system that recovers the fuel vapor inside tank and burns it in engine , the vapors are collected in a canister then pulled into engine and burned off , this gets clogged up sometimes and needs replacement , the new gas pump nozzles have what is called a closed loop system , they need to sense a no pressure backfeed from gas tank when filling it in order to work , long and the short of it , gas nozzle won;t allow fuel in if vapor in tank builds up from a backed up canister

98 Grand Prix gas comes out of filler tube while running anybody know why

My first guess would be a problem with the gas tank venting system. The computer is supposed to vent the tank to the vapor canister when the engine is running.

Engine error code p1456

Four digit codes can be brand specific, meaning the code can mean different things for different brands.
The generic meaning is the EVAP system has a small leak. The computer vents the gas tank to the vapor canister several times while you are driving.

Service engine soon light came on, replaced gas cap it went off but a week later it came back on, when it try to fuel the truck it spill the gas back out like it is a full tank

One of the most common causes, is blockage in the venting system from fuel entering the vent lines and into the charcoal canister, the fuel gets absorbed by the charcoal canister causing it to swell and block vent lines. the gas tank contains both fuel and air. when you fill it up the gas displaces the air and the air has to go somewhere. but the air that is displaced is full of gas vapor so the gas vapor goes to the vent lines and into the charcoal canister, when the charcoal canister swells up it prevents the air from escaping the tank, canister could be clogged, canister filter may need replacement, electrical connection to the close valve may be open, canisterf might be damaged, purge valve from canister might be clogged, vent hoses might be clogged, the vent hose could be clogged, or the vent hose may have a kink. all this is caused by overfilling the gas tank, getting that last drop of gas in the neck of the fill tube.
good luck!

Gas pump keeps tripping off often

you have a bad charcoal canister. Go underneath the left rear of the car, pull the big hose off the charcoal canister, and if charcoal come out of the hose, replace the canister. This is a common problem w/Hyundai and Kia.

The solenoids and system wiringare monitored for opens or shorts

The only thing that can cause a saturated vapor canister is over filling the fuel tank.,
