Likely went low on oil. If its a twin cylinder, suspect a broken rod and it's running on 1 cylinder. Especially if you hear a periodic knock. Remove both plugs and check for compression with finger over plug hole.

If you find a factory service manual, it will be for an 80 cubic inch (1340 cc) engine only. In 1991, all Big Twins came equipped with the 80 c.i. Evolution engine. The Twin Cam 88 c.i.
