Check the sprockets. Got a stick or rock binding the chain? Remove the chain. Does the wheel spin freely? Brake frozen?

Since your bike is water cooled, a seized piston is not too likely. Got water in the radiator? Most likely is a broken torsion spring on the kick start shaft. The adjacent ratchet wheel and the kick shaft should be inspected. The ratchet wheel should have a smooth movement. If not then replace it. The kick shaft should not show wear or damage. The same is true for the kick gear and idler gear. Replace as needed.

The only other possibilities are a frozen main bearing, (not likely), a broken or severely bent shift fork, (more likely than a main bearing).

Please rate this solution. Thanks!

Okay, so what do you find?

  • tombones Apr 11, 2009

Okay, can you disconnect the starter to eliminate it from the possible list of what could be freezing up the motor?

  • tombones Apr 11, 2009

Assuming the chain is not the problem, and the kick start is the problem, the cost to repair will only be the cost of the parts. The kickstart repair is something you can do yourself. Disassemble the kick mechanism and that the parts to the dealer. Then you can match up the parts they give you with the old parts to be sure you get the correct parts. Same thin goes for the starter if that is the problem.

An inappropriate rating is for a solution that is not related to your problem. If someone responded, "Check the air in the tires," or "The icemaker is broken, buy a new one," those would be inappropriate. Suggesting the most likely sources of your problem is not an inappropriate answer.

I am trying to help you out. Change the rating to " helpful " ?

It is VERY good that the wheel spins and you can shift without a problem. So that leaves the kick start mechanism, starter motor, piston seize and main bearing as the remaining possibilities.

PLEASE CHANGE THE RATING. As a matter of pride I try to help.

Let me know what you find out. Thanks.

remove the cover that houses the kick starter and look for a failed return spring or some other reason that keeps the kick start dog engaged.

I have a '01 WR 426, one the thing is a bear to

The starting procedure is... Kick it over slowely untill it stops, pull in the compression release lever and kick just a little more to get it past "Top dead center". (An inch or two) Then let the kick starter return all the way up, .... and give it a smooth firm kick. Not a ****.

I have an 1974 kiwasaki ke100 and i was riding it and all of a sudden my bike stalls and when i tried to kickstart it to try to start it back up the kick starter wouldnt let me kick it down it seemed to be...

this could be really bad or really easy. first, lets hope its vapor lock. take your spark plug out and see if it will turn. if yes, kick it a few times and replace spark plug. if not then we need to see if the kickstarts malfunctioning or the motors lock. put the bike in about third gear, grab the clutch and pull it in, now run beside and push the bike with the clutch in, get some speed and dump the clutch. Hopefully the engine will start turning over, in fact if you have the switchs on you can start the bike this way. If the engine does not turn over like that then you have a drivetrain problem, without seeing the bike theres no way to pinpoint it. Lets just hope the steps above work and you dont have any major problems, good luck.
