1988 cheverolet goes thru a lot of gas..changed air filter didn't help, all the general stuffed checked over...tire pressure, etc;..what device controls gas flow to carb,?? thanks.

Anyway, with that said, there could be a few items that would cause that. Have you noticed or do you see black soot from tailpipe at all? Have you pulled any spark plugs to see how they are burning? In the long run, it usually worth it, after you check those things, to pay to have it scanned for fault codes, and go from there. With that said, a faulty oxygen sensor will cause poor gas mileage. About ($20) at parts store.
If it a carb not tb there is a couple set screws on the carb. run at 700 rpm or idel u need to put a vacum gauge on trying to get the high vacum out of it. on the carb to set the vacum what kind of carb is it these set screws control fuel and air flow when adjusted right. should be better gas saver question is 2 b or 4b carb

If there is a lot of pitting or corrosion visible, it would not hurt.
Replacing the spark plugs and air filter would help.
Changing engine oil and oil filter may not help with milage but it will make the engine last longer.
Increasing tire air pressure to the maximum rated for the tires will usually result in better milage but may actually increase tire wear rate.

First of all, is it leaking anywhere ? Second check your air filter.Third check your tire pressure on all tires,make sure they are all the same and at what psi they are supposed to be.Fourth check for mud caked on your inside rims.Also if car is running rough get plugs and maybe wires and get an oil change.

well could be a number of things check tire pressure on all tires the same check cataletic converter for clogged you can check and change air and fuel filters and check fuel pressure check and or change o2 sensors if equiped and also check plugs and wires cap and rotor button. need to know what all has been done to pin point prob. i hope this helped
goto pepboys autozone, etc. pick up some ZMAX or look for a fuel system cleaner called RUN RIGHT, run this thru the car, you may have build up that is robbing power and using a lot of gas, run that thru and then check to see if your milage is any better, also check your tire pressure, look on the inside of the driver door for correct pressure for the cars tires will be there, if the pressure you find is to low that can cause it, and if the tires are to full that can cause it to..... bring the tire pressures to the correct level, run the fuel system cleaner, that should help quite a bit.... hope this helps you...
Is this a new problem? If so, I'd check/replace the catalytic converter. They clog if bad gas gets into them. Performance is usually affected. If the car has alot of mileage, replace all the oxygen sensors...they affect fuel mix. Change your oil to a 5-20 oil. Change your air filter. Change your plugs if more than 70K miles. Check tire pressure (Mr. Obama is right!) Check wheel alignment by looking at tire wear. Repair any loose front end parts. Check brakes for excessive drag...does the vehicle stop straight???? Use Techron additive to clean fuel injectors following instructions. Finally, do you use your brakes alot? Fast starts? On/off the gas alot? Drive smoothly!
