SOURCE: i need to remove the fuel tank on my 2006 harley davidson

I haven't worked on a bike as new as yours but your bike is one of the Dyna series of motorcycles that Harley makes. Most Dyna's have one piece tanks instead of the twin tanks like on a Softail series bike.

To get the tank off, first remove the seat. Disconnect the fuel lines and drain the fuel from the tank. Disconnect the fuel "crossover" hose at the front of the tank. Disconnect any wires going to fuel gauges and fuel pumps in the tank. Now, take the nut off the top of the dash and remove it. There should be three bolts that hold the instrument cluster on, remove them. Unplug the connectors under the instrument cluster, usually three of those. Now, there is one bolt at the front of the tank and possibly two at the rear. Lift the tank off the frame.

Taking the tank off is not that difficult of a problem. Just watch what you're doing and don't force anything. If something won't come off, look for anonother bolt somewhere. Usually, the wiring connectors are idiot proof in that they will only connect with the correct mating plug and you can't connect them in the wrong way.

If the bike per chance has split tanks, you won't have to take the instrument panel off the frame, just the dash cover. The tanks have two bolts in the front and one bolt in the rear of each tank, one on either side of the frame.

Now, keep in mind that I told you that I haven't worked on your particular model of bike doing this particular job. But, Harley usually doesn't change much on their bikes. View the information I gave you here a "general guidelines". Use your head and you'll be using the best tool you've got. No problem.

Testimonial: "thank you. i am going to give it a shot. i layed the bike over a couple weeks ago. i need to paint the tank. "

SOURCE: Replacement of a stock fuel gauge on a '06 Harley Street Bob.

no need to remove tank, Remove terminal pins from connector under left side of tank then pull gauge and wires out. Install new gauge, replace terminal pins in their propper place in the connector, plug it in and varify the repair.

SOURCE: How do I change the fork oil on a 2002 Heritage

look at the fork legs at the bottom there is a bolt on both legs its only a small bolt,,, undo this bolt and the fork oil will drain out,, to refill the forks take the top nut off the fork leg near the handel bars,,,,,,dont over fill with oil,,,and only use the proper oil,,or the seals will blow out and the forks will be very stiff

2009 harley street bob fork seal replacement

I have never seen seals replaced without dismantling the forks. The seal will come in a fork revbuild kit whether the bushings etc are used or not. Obtained separately but necessary in any case are new lower fork bolts and copper washers. I suppose it might be possible to get the seal out of the fork leg without completely dismantling the fork but the normal way of removing the seal is to use the slider as a slider hammer tool to drive the upper bushing and seal from the fork leg which requires removal of the lower bolt and washer and pretty much fully dismantling the fork. You will also need a special fork holder tool or at the least a pair of vise soft jaws and it is critical how much fork oil is added back into the fork as too much will make the ride unacceptably hard and too little will allow the fork to compress too much and be too soft. You also really need an appropriate seal installer to reinstall the seal and upper bushing etc. All that being said:

Forks rebuilt, oil leaks.

Just a thought.Aren't late model sportster forks,on the 1200"s,49mm?Check that manual to see if the procedure is the same.If not then guess which one is right.Don't know bout late models but the early mm lower sliders had a fiber washer that could get damaged if the last assembly bolt, allen head, wasn't put in just right.Good luck.
