The first place I would look is the ignition switch. If it keeps the starter engaged then it is not returning from the start position to the run position. You can help it by turniing the key back a fraction when the engine fires.. If that dosen't work there may be a short in the solenoid that is keeping the pinion engaged. The onlt other thing that may cause a problem is burred ring and pinion gears .. But I suspest that the fault is in the ignition switch

Occasionally, about every 6 to 8 times tried, the engine will turn but not start. If I turn the key off for about 3 seconds, it usually starts within a few turns. Do you know what can cause this?

A year, make, model, and engine size would help but I will through this at you.

Instead of just trying to start the car turn the key to the run position and wait 3 seconds. Turn the key off and immediately turn the key back to the run position and wait another 3 seconds. Turn the key off then try to start. Do this every time you try to start the car. If you symptom never occurs when you start the vehicle like this than I would suggest taking a closer look at the fuel system.

It starts and then turns off. And the letters EPC are on and a picture of a car with a key.

i think this means that immbilizor is on and you need to turn it off. There is many different ways to do this, every make of car is different. You should look in the oweners manual. if not, try to turn the key 3 times in the ignition, but dont start is. then try to start. if that wont work try and see if the key turns anticlockwise slot and then try to start it. if that does not work your immobilizor is stuck and i cant help. hope that helps.

2004 dodge neon key will not turn in the ignition , it was working well then today I started the car drove for a while stopped and when i tried to put the key in a start the car , the key will not turn ,...

It could be the tumblers in the switch, possibly a worn out key(try another key if you have one) or the steering may be in a bind, are the front tires against a curb.

While trying to turn the key try to turn the steering wheel in both directions.

Let me know what you find.

2001 gmc yukon xl key in ignition won't turn to start at all.

The tumblers in the ignition lock may be seized, try cleaning it out first with a small spray of WD40 and try the spare ignition keys. The keys it self may be too worn down for the tumblers in the lock and if you have lots of other keys on your key chains, this will promote the lock to wear out quicker. Good luck and hope this helps and try turning the steering where back and forth as you try to turn the ignition key.

Key stuck in ignition

Be sure its all the way in park or try neutral. Its possible that security system does not recognize the key. Is security light flashing or on steady? Shut all doors and windows, trunk, hood, turn off all accessory's,roll down drivers window, turn key off and remove for at least 1 minute, insert key into ignition, try to start leaving key to run position for 20 minutes, turn key to off, wait 15 seconds, try to start again leaving key to run, wait 20 minutes, turn key off, wait 15 seconds, try to start, again leaving key to run, wait 20 minutes, turn key off, wait 15 seconds, try to start. This should relearn key code. It may relearn after 1 learn cycle and start if system is ok. Hope this helps and that the weather is dry and warm for this procedure! This is not always a fix, but works most of the time.
