SOURCE: shifter stuck in second gear

Your shift linkage has come undone. Jack the car up and climb underneath. You shift linkage is either com undone from the trans or you shift stabelize bad has come undone at the shift arm.

SOURCE: clutch

believe it or not, the floormat on my 2000 Sunfire will sometimes slip forward and hold the clutch pedal down against the floor. It truly feels like a mechanical problem, but simply pull the floormat away and the pedal pops right back up!

Does the clutch pedal go to the floor? If not the clutch is not the problem and the transmission or transmission linkage is, inspect all components for loose or damaged components.

check that the cable hasn't come loose in the adjustment or broken . Check that any linkages have not come undone.

That sounds like a mechanical issue in the shifter itself. You need to take the console apart to see what's going on. I doubt it is the transmission itself.

Clutch pedal is tight, stick shifter is tight. however it will not go into gear, with or without clutch pedal, and stays running, doesnt stall. new clutch three months ago

If your car wont go into gear when the engine is NOT started then you have a gearbox problem not clutch.you should still be able to get all gears without using the clutch pedal. The clutch is only there to stop you stalling when standing still,Its possible (but not nice)to drive and change gear without a clutch.Hope this helps.

I have a 2000 zx2 escort..the clutch feels loose and cud not get in gear..now the gear shifter easly goes into gear but the car will not move..the shifter feels very loose as so does the clutch..could

Sounds like the clutch friction plate was on the way out when you bought the car. The smell you mentioned was probably from the clutch plate slipping.
You need someone knowledgeable to check the linkage is correctly set up and advise if a new clutch plate is required.

The clutch system is hydraulic just like your brakes are. You have a slave cylinder and a master cylinder. You must have a leak somewhere, and will have to see what part it is, or have it looked at. Once replaced, the system needs to be bled of air just like brakes do.

My 2005 Pontiac Sunfire intermittantly grinds when shifting into first gear. This has been happening ever since I took the car in for its 60,000 mile tune-up early this year. I replaced my clutch three...

I believe the problem is the first gear synchronizer. They are what allows the gears to mesh together without grinding. As they wear, they are less able to mesh the gears together without grinding. The first gear gets used the most, so that one usually wears first. Each gear has them, so as time goes on, the others will wear. To replace the synchronizer/s, involves diaasembling the transmission. I would have the transaxle fluid level checked, maybe as simple as that. But usually it's the prior.
