I have a 1997 pontiac sunfire with a manual transmission. I can not get the car to go into gear and the clutch pedal has no pressure. I saw that fluid is leaking out at the spot where the gear shifter meets the transmission. Any ideas on what is going on and how to fix it/

Does the clutch pedal go to the floor? If not the clutch is not the problem and the transmission or transmission linkage is, inspect all components for loose or damaged components.

my sunfire is automatic, and the gear shifter is VERY LOOSE, doesnt catch in any of the drive options. just slides up & down, with no pressure

Does the clutch pedal engage? This sounds like a clutch problem to me.

going what you say here i would try a coolant sensor get it from the dealor its better.

SOME THING HAPPEN OR WASN'T PUT BACK RIGHT IN THE SHIFT LINKAGE WHEN IT WAS PUT BACK IN.......

Sounds like the clutch is going out. I would check the operation of the clutch slave cylinder. Also check the clutch master cylinder fluid level.

Hard shifting may be caused be the clutch not releasing properly.If you have a new clutch your problem might be caused by your hydraulic clutch release system.When stopped and idling you should be able to shift gears without grinding.Reverse grinding may indicate a clutch release problem.You should have some clutch pedal travel up from the floor before you feel it engaging.The oil fill check is either at the speedo or a plug at the axle shaft level.Be sure to use factory recommended fluid.Gear oil is not a proper fluid.

check automatic adjuster on clutch pedal under dash .

sounds like a tourqe converter issueif its an automatic or an issue with the synchro's if the vehicle is manual transmission if its manual look at your clutch pedal see if it has play in it or if anything is bent first then check the transmission fluid
