I have an 88 4x4 1500 and mine is located on the passengers side just under the glove box it looks like a solid black fuse mine was wrapped up with some black tape that i had to remove and yes you do have to disconnect it before trying to set the timming.
please explain the layout ,is it 4x4 ,manual or automatic transmission ,either way the drain plug will be on the lowest point of the gearbox so dont go undoing bolts without knowing ,the drain plug will also have a square drive set into the head so its easiely identifiable
