Check all of the electrical connections on the engine, and the vacuum hoses.

Sounds like your car needs a tune-up, specifically, the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, and/of the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve.

Components checked/replaced during a tune-up are:
air filter
motor oil
motor oil filter
breather filter
fuel filter(s)
fuel strainer
PCV valve
EGR valve
spark plugs
spark plug wires
ECM or distributor cap & rotor
cabin air filter
transmission oil filter
transmission oil
engine coolant
check all vacuum hoses and lines

Don't stop at red lights and stop signs...

How many miles are on the engine? When was your last tune up? If it's been a while then I would start by changing the fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, oil change, etc.

Car idles rough and stalls at stop signs

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome to the site. There are a few things that can cause this. You need to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak in the engine. Make sure your pcv valve is not clogged and working. You could have a clogged fuel filter or air filter. If you haven't had a tune up in a long time, get it done. At the least, change the spark plugs/coils, wires, coil packs. These are more of the common issues that cause this. If you have a check engine light on, take it to Autozone and have it scanned. They do it for free and it can lead you to your problem. If not, check all of the above parts and eliminate what doesn't need changed. Best regards.

When 87 suzuki stops it dies, hesitation when starting

I've never seen a samurai without a PCV valve hooked up. You sure its just missing it cuase that is what releases the pressure build up in the engine. If not working/installed then you're gonna get piston blow by, oil burning, and a rough running engine.

Dumb question: where is the pcv valve

PCV Valve sits on one of the Valve Covers.

Side Question: Sounds kinda like a tune up is in order. Plugs wires fuel filter.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more help!

Sincerely,

JC
