My 1997 Cherokee is not the grand cherokee. It is the Sport. I have no brake lights and the bulbs look good. There is not a fuse listed in the manual for brake lights. All the other lights are listed. Are the brake lights in with ABS relay or some other fuse?

Have you checked the brake light fuse to see if there is power at the fuse and out of the fuse, also check the brake light switch for power in and out when the pedal is pressed, do that and get back to me.?
have you checked the relays.there is one relay in the fuse box up under the dash on the drivers side and the is other relay in the fuse box in the kick panel on the passengers side next to the blower motor. I drive a 1997 leep grand cherokee myself for work
Sounds like one of your bulb sockets is shorted out. I have seen bulbs almost melted in their sockets, on grand cherokees in the past. You will have to check all the brake light and bulb sockets to see if they are shorted.
This may sound too simple, but it's the same with low beam headlights, until they both burn out you didn't know you had any problems. The cops are usually good for helping us keep track of this. Try two new bulbs. All three bulbs are on the same fused circuit so that eliminates that problem. Let me know how this turns out, Dana
did you replace the bulbs if yes check if you got anypower going to the bulb socket if no it is usually the brake pedal switch. try to disconnect the switch and check for 12 v at the switch connector or if anyligts comes on in the back
Sounds like your brake light switch needs to be replaced. It is attached to the brake pedal and should cost you around $20 from an auto parts store. If the fuses and bulbs are good there is a 99% chance it is the brake light switch. Hope this helps! Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa.
