What is a Harmonic Balancer?
The Harmonic Balancer, or vibration damper, is a component connected directly to the front of the engine on the crankshaft. Its sole purpose is to reduce torsional vibrations created by the engine as the cylinders fire.
What causes Harmonic Balancer failure?
There are a variety of possible causes for balancer failure. Most common among these are heat stress, wear from road salt, oil leak, or ozone attacking the rubber components, damage inflicted by road debris, crankshaft failure, stress from integrated drive pulleys, and stress caused by loads from other devices such as power steering pump, AC compressor, alternator, air pump, and water pump.
typically harmonic balancers are balanced and indexed to the crankshart they are bolted to. the harmonic balancer should have been replaced when it first came apart. it sounds like the the reinstallation of the defective balancer caused the rotating assembly of the engine to be out of balance. given time this will always damage the main bearings of the engine and I think this is the loud knock you are now hearing. do not continue to use the car and take it to a competent mechanic to evaluate and give you an estimate for the repairs.
i dont think is your harmonic balancer that dont make any sound check all the pulleys cose to change the harmonic ba... you havto remove and change your crank pulley along with it
the garage may have did something to the crank position sensor that is located behind the harmonic balance. there is a ring gear there to for the timing
Parts stores sell a "harmonic balance pulley remover" for around 15-20 dollars. Much like a steering wheel puller, it's a gear puller made to remove the harmonic balancer with engine in car.
CRANKSHAFT PULLEY IS THE HARMONIC BALANCER.YOU NEED THESE TOOLS TO REMOVE HARMONIC BALANCER, YOU NEED HARMONIC BALANCER REMOVER AND INSTALLER TOOL.YOU NEED A LARGE PIN SPANNER WRENCH TO HOLD HARMONIC BALANCER IN PLACE WHILE LOOSEN THE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT.
YOU NEED A HARMONIC BALANCER PULLER TOOL AND A 15M SIX POINT SOCKET TO REMOVE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT.TURN OFF RADIO AND REMOVE THE DRIVE BELT AND REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. REMOVE THE STARTER SO YOU CAN PUT A LARGE SCREW DRIVER OR LARGE PUNCH TO STICK IN ONE OF THE FLY WHEEL HOLES TO KEEP ENGINE FROM TURNING WHEN YOU LOOSEN THE HARMONIC BALANCE BOLT. ALSO SCREW DRIVER AND PUNCH CAN KEEP ENGINE FROM TURNING WHEN REMOVER THE HARMONIC BALANCER. YOU WILL NEED A HELPER TO HOLD PUNCH OR SCREW DRIVER WHILE YOU LOOSEN THE BOLT. YOU CAN GO TO SEARS OR ANY AUTO PARTS STORE AND BUY HARMONIC BALANCER PULLER.TORQUE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT TO 76 FT LBS.
usually all crankshaft sensors are located right next to the main drive pulley (Harmonic balancer). As far as being easy is concerned some are not so easy as some require the removal of the harmonic balancer to get to it.. but you might be lucky Gm is pretty good at making the Crankshaft sensor accessible without removing the harmonic balancer.
First remove radiator fan shrould. This will give you access to the fan.Remove fan and fan belts.Remove bolt on harmonic balancer. You will need to rent a balancer remover and installer kit. Most big auto parts chains will rent these kits to you.Next remove four bolts holding pulley to balancer.Next attach balancer puller to balancer with long bolts from kit.Using a 1\2 drive breaker bar, remove balancer from engine. After removing balancer replace front seal.Lubricate hub on new balancer with engine oil. Then use installation tool from kit to install balancer.Never try to beat balancer on with hammer, engine damage could occur. Then work in reverse to replace remaining parts.Hope this will help you.
how long does it take to change the timing chain on the 2.2l ecotec engine?
