My 96 Jimmy 1500 xt struggles to start on the first turn of the key. Then starts perfectly every other turn afterwards. Mechanic thinks it might be the coil. I think fuel is ok. Must be spark issue?

Have you replaced your fuel filter lately? If not try it. My friends Chevy will do that same thing and then we change the fuel filter and it's good to go. Also try turning you key on for a few seconds before trying to start it and see if you can hear the fuel pump running. You should hear it run for a few seconds and if not you may have a fuel pump relay or pump acting up. You could also do a fuel pressure test with a pressure gauge when it is cold also.

Sounds like you are loosing fuel pressure overnight. Since it takes 70+ psi to start and run, if you have zero pressure in the morning, it would take a long time of cranking to get the pressure back up.
If it is low or no pressure, the problem could be a faulty check valve in the fuel pump.

PROBLEMS WITH IGNITION SWITCH CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH MY SPEEDOMETER AS WELL AS MY TRANSMISSION

definitely sounds like timing after reading over your other posts. I had a pontiac die unexpectedly on me in the same way, but luckily i knew an expert mechanic who filled me in. Passing it on to you as the likely culprit. about 800 to pay someone to do it, or it is actually not hard to do yourself with a socket set, screwdriver, gear puller and a weekend. Did mine with absolutely no experience at all (I was 16) and it worked perfect afterwards.

I think I would start with checking fuel pressure. You should have at least 40PSI at the fuel rail. You might have someone help you our and turn on the key while you get under your vehicle and listen for the whirrr of the fuel pump. It should cycle for about 3 seconds when the key is turned to the "ON" position to prime the system to start. If you can not hear the pump run or it does not sound smooth I think you will need to replace it.

1997 GMC Jimmy sometimes will not start

I had a similar problem several years ago on my 97 Jimmy. There is a switch in the steering column that had gone bad, had to be replaced and no problem since. The symptons sounded just like yours. My trusted mechanic found the problem after a lot of testing and fixed it.

The other mechanic is correct. Your timing belt is due to be replaced. When you have it replaced, make sure you replace the water pump while you're there.
