Replace the temperature sending unit.
If your auxiliary cooling fan (the one that always runs when AC is on- check that it does) is not turning on when the temp gauge is in the red, then the temperature sensor/sender is going bad and giving you bad information.
This one is likely located on the engine block itself and has no more than two wires, some only one.
Make sure though that you don't confuse the oil pressure sensor with the temperature sensor; they may look a lot the same.

Thermostat could be sticking.I would replace the thermostat and flush the coolant system out with a good coolant flush.Then put some new coolant in ,this should help.
