Cannot be sure here without a on site inspection but i would hazard a guess and say the flex drive plate has broke around the crankshaft retaining bolts ,its a gearbox out job to repair ,the plate holds the torque converter in position to the engine crank ,Dont get this problem with a manual transmission
Does this mean I need a new gearbox and is this problem expensive to fix?

no you do not need a new gearbox just the metal drive plate --if this is the problem that is but without a look myself i honestly couldnt say and no one can answer this no matter how tgood they are without a physical inspection ,but if it is this drive plate thats broke that part on its own is not expensive as such but its the labour involved in removing the gearbox to change it
