It may be a dying console (faulty electronics). Never heard of the compass dimming when you press the gas. Does it dim when you are in park and press the gas? If you give the console a gentle tap, does it brighten back up? Do other lights dim?
No. As far as I know there is no way to test the key without the vehicle so unless it is visibly damaged they won't be able to tell if it's good or not. If you contact your local Ford dealer they should be able to explain what they will require to diagnose the problem.
I have same van (2001) a relative give me. My uncle (orig owner) have a recall card from ford for SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM MODIFICATION..maybe this is the problem. my van is doing the same thing like yours...no codes.. but sometimes the odometer wont go higher than 35mph...
moisture affecting something,first check the plug wires at night ,put water in a spray bottle like a windex bottle, have vehicle running and spray a mist on the wires,if they are leaking spark it will light up like a little city under the hood.next is mist the cap and coil to see if the the engine dies
Since you are getting the 171 and 174 at the same time you need to replace the mass air flow sensor.then clear the codes.After which take the car for a drive and let me know how it does.
