98 Mountaineer shifts back and forth from 3rd to overdrive...like it doesn't know what gear to hang it..it shifts hard at times...anybody got a answer for this..??? Thanks,
Thank so much for the response. Yet, I have changed the VSS located on the rear-end, top of the differential and it improved the condition for a while ( kinda strange) and now it's back going back and forth from overdrive to 3rd..with just a little hit of the throttle..and backing off it pops back in to overdrive....doesn't know to stay put or shift. It's there another sensor I need to change???? Could the Throttle Position sensor be an issue..??? Thanks...Thank so much for the response. look at fluid levels and color of fluid.. if brown instead of reddish take to transmission service and do fluid and filter change..may have a clogged filter..
NEVER TOW in OVERDRIVE, you will burn up the Transmisison
Under normal Driving Conditions, leave it in OD (Overdrive), the vehicle will automatically choose the gear for you
If you are driving up and down Hills (Mountains) where it is shifting back and forth a lot, my own personal preference is to take it out of OD until I am going down the hills. I hate the shifting back and forth and prefer to keep the RPM's up in the 2200 -2350 range to maximize the engine....
you will need to connect it ti a scanner to confirm but it sounds like your solenoid (there is a solenoid that controls those gears inside your tranny) the part is actually cheap and should take no time to replace. the cost comes in a way of replacing the tranny fluid that will be lost.
Honda transmissions,as well as most other overdrive transmissions, should be driven at all times in drive 4,or the overdrive position, with the exception of severe driving conditions, such as towing a load, extremely hilly terrain,or long uphill grades, the trans should be taken out of overdrive, and placed in the drive 3 position. This is to prevent the perpetual shifting back and forth of the trans from 3rd into 4th,back to 3rd,back to 4th,back to 3rd,that would eventually damage both the 3rd and 4th gear clutch discs and components.
