as you probily know this is a computer controlled trans
what we need to look at is wht the computer is looking at and what it does with the information.
so this thruck is looking at pressures in the trans and speed sensors.
also it looks at your throttle position sensor
you could have a couple of problems that wouldnt show up as a trouble code. like a bad throttle position switch .
telling your computer that you have your foot deep in the throttle calling for a down shift. but i dont like to guess on these things it should be tested .
you caould also have a programming problem with the ecm. and need to be flashed .
my first step would be to test the TPS

Fastboyz is on track with his answer.there are quite a few updates on your transmission for shift concerns. this is done with a tech2 scanner and reprograms computer. also if you have installed larger tires this will need to be updated. can cause problem also.Just because there is no trouble code does not mean it is not a computer related problem. have it checked for updates

transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in

heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself

to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

you stand a better chance of removing the bolts that hold the bed to the frame and taillight plug and 2 guys can lift bed back about a foot, you can get right at it with out removing the lines.i would not want to remove the tank unless the gas is drained out. also disturb gas tank strapes tank might start leaking. save yourself alot of time and trouble and remove the bed. whatever way you do it good luck. need more info i had a 1984 chevy half ton and first, second, and third worked fine but lock up didnt work. the problem was there was no vacum at a switch under the hood on the fire wall also your shift linkage could be out of adjustment. try driving down the road and raise up a little on the shifter.
