More info is needed here, but the idle air valve is the first component that comes to mind, followed by vacuum leaks. Is this a '98 or an' 87? The post says both!

Why does it idle at 2,500-3,000 rpm then drop to 1,000 rpm in drive or reverse?

Hi Paul:
Here are my random observations:
- 2500 to 3000 is really high for "idle"
- Putting it into drive or reverse engages the transmission and puts load on the engine through the torque converter. Since the RPM is high enough that the vehicle thinks it should be moving, the transmission will engage and rpm will drop since more power is needed.
What to do? How long since tuneup?
History? Did this just start immediately, or did it sneak up a bit at a time.
Make, model, engine, year, Kms or miles. Give us some info and someone who is a better transmission specialist will probably kave some more ideas.
Cheers.

The tachometer shows 900 RPM on idle position but as i put the car in gear and release the clutch the RPM drops and u have to race the car manually through accelerator pedal.recomend the diagnostics a

The engine does not need to be raced when cold

The vehicles computer will adjust the idle according
to how the manufacture programmed it

After about one mine or so, the idle on most vehicles
comes down to approx 750RPM, generically speaking

When you put the car in gear, assuming it is an automatic,
the rpm will drop a 100 at most & may be adjusted by the
computer, just as it does when you put the A/C on. That is
to compensate for the change in engine load

You should be waiting for the rpm to come down to 650 to
800 & then a couple more minutes for some temp to come
up, before driving off. In cold weather wait at least 5 min or more

I think your vehicle is not working correctly, or you not explaining
it in a way I understand what answer you want

1987 chevy r20 rough idle

Well, the computer is supposed to open the IAC to keep the RPM above 600 or so depending on the load on the engine.
If you have voltage and ground for the IAC it should raise idle speed to at least 1100 when you first start the engine cold.
If that is not happening, I would look for carbon build up in the throttle body. You can apply voltage to the IAC and open it to see if the air passage is open too.

I believe you have a transmission mount that is bad, possibly and engine mount. When you are shifting the engine will raise and bump the firewall, floorpan.
Good luck

Engine stalls when put into gear , rpm goes up and down sometimes 450rpm and other times 750rpm. if it doesn't stall it runs fine.

sounds like the idle air control is either clogged with carbon or it is bad. take iac off and clean out the passage way to engine. do not put valve in any liquid, only the end of valve can be cleaned were valve is. do not push on valve while cleaning or the adjustment will be messed up.depending on the size of engine it should idle at about 650 to 700 rpms.I have a 3.1 and it idles at 650 rpms,

1990 Buick stalls when coming to a stop

Sounds like the torque converter clutch solenoid is bad. Unplug it and see if the problem stops. Unplug the 4 wire plug on the front of the transmission.
